 ants are considered wildlife and pest as well that's why I prefer to use praying mantis  to get rid of them so there will be a few around but  not  too many

In all seriousness: I've only had trouble with ants farming their aphids on my potted citrus trees, never the ones in the ground. I've had great success with putting DE -Diatomacious Earth - all around the base. I've even dusted the lower trunk with DE, and that worked too. DE is crystaline and gets in their joints and makes them not work and so kills the ants Because the DE will disappear over time you have to replace it now and again, but a very large bag isn't terribly expensive. I don't know why you couldn't do this with ones in the ground too, especially dusting the lower trunks.
