If you want something other than white or greenish colored flowers, I'd look at the bigleaf hydrangeas, H. macrophylla. And specifically those that will flower on both new and old growth, unless you are prepared to offer protection from winter cold and late spring freezes that can damage latent flower buds. Depending on soil chemistry, you will get the widest range of flower colors from this species.

They are very tolerant of shade and love afternoon shade but will bloom a bit sparsely in heavy shade.

Another possibility is H. arborescens 'Incrediball Blush' with pale, silvery pink mophead blooms.

Oakleaf hydrangeas are also very tolerant of shade and bloom well.

But oakleafs only offer white flowers, although they may age to a reddish pink in lots of sun.

The endless summer varieties like the Summer Crush are bigleaf, correct? Seems like a lot of mixed reviews for those on here. Love the color of the Summer Crush though. But if I wont get hardly any blooms in the shade, maybe not the best choice?
