Oversized Bedding issue

We just splurged and bought one of those behemoth luxury mattresses. King size. The problem is: my bedding doesn't fit. My existing comforter looks like it is a queen size on a king bed. The fitted sheet is fine, but the top sheet isn't long enough. Does anyone know of any websites that sell over sized bedding, or perhaps a DIY solution to this problem. I love my new bed, but maybe the 20" mattress was a bit too much. Should I blow the dust off on my ol' Singer and get sewing?

You may be able to switch your box springs to a smaller version as there is frequently a choice of two different thicknesses. And with the price that a 20" mattress must have cost, it's likely that it was offered with a 90 day trade in policy. You could check on that.

A couple of years ago I bought a Restoration Hardware quilt which was extremely generous in size, so it's possible that their sheets may be equally so. I think that a 20" mattress is way too thick, unless of course you are able to determine the presence of a small pea under a mattress any thinner than that!

As Carolyn suggested you can get a low profile box spring to shave off a couple inches in overall height.
Also the catalog Company Store sells oversized duvets and comforters.

Thanks Carolyn - we opted for the smaller box springs, but the comforter still only comes down 1/4 of the way of the mattress not the full length of the mattress. Just measured the mattress and it is 18" not 20". Best nights sleep I have had in years, got a great price too! Current comforter measures 108x96 - anything available larger to accommodate the extra width I need?

The Restoration Hardware quilt I have, according to RH's online dimensions is 114 x 96. If you place the quilt so the the long dimension runs from side to side on the 76" wide mattress, it should come down 19" on each side. From the top of the bed to the foot and over the end of the mattress, the measurement should be 80 from top to bottom, leaving you 16" hanging down at the bottom of the bed and you could probably pull it away from the top by a few inches since you'll have pillows up there to cover the gap. Go take a look at RH's quilts, or check the dimensions online.

If you do end up having a comforter/duvet custom made you might want to consider what my brother did when in a similar situation. He had a duvet custom made and had them put 1/3 of the fill on one side and 2/3 fill on the other, so now he has his and hers side to the comforter. He takes the lighter side and his spouse, who is inevitably colder than he is, gets the warmer side.
