Please help with living room furniture & floor plan

I would love some opinions on layouts that would suit my living room. None of the current furniture is staying. My biggest problem is the door to the left behind the couch - it is not the front door but it does lead to the front garden. If we don't intend on using it could we place furniture in front of it?

Hi, If you have no intentions of using the door, you could hang a curtain rod over it and treat it like a window.

You didn't photograph that wall though.

Could you show a 360 degree view of the space?

If you would like layout ideas, the best thing to do would be to draw a graph with measurements, that will help others make suggestions.

Is this a primary living room or a tv / kids playroom?

Angelina Vick - oops. I did mean to add dimensions. Will have to do it after kids are in bed!
Gail wolverton- it is all of them -shared tv room & kids play area

You don't show what's around that corner, so I'll assume its doorways or otherwise unusable space. No, I wouldn't block the door, even if you don't plan to use it - it just won't look right. I see your dilemma with all those windows! And I assume you will still have a TV in this room? I'm wondering if you could squeeze it in between those two wi does where all the toys are? Then I would do a sectional or sofa with chaise, the chaise going at the far (window) end of the room. Float the furniture out in the room to be centred in front of the TV, and make sure you have 10 - 12' distance between seating and TV, depending on TV size. Matching side panels on all the windows will make the space cohesive. You look like you could use some toy storage! Pick up some nice cubbies from Ikea and put matching baskets or bins in them to hold as much as possible. It's really hard to corral everything, but could this unseen corner be a designated l,ay area, with the cubbies and baskets right behind the sofa so things are somewhat out of sight? Easier said than done, I know!

I also see a second rug in the foreground - is that your dining room?

I agree with Karemore...do not block your door because it always feels awkward :0 I also agree that yo should hang tv on wall between windows and center your seating around it. ...perhaps with kids you might consider a sectional. With the tv more central you could place a good size toy box under the far window...possibly even a window seat that opens up. The childrens chairs can go in their individual rooms cuz if they are anything like my grandkids ...they want to snuggle on the big couch. A good size coffee table...or whatever is a a must with your sectional...again you can get one that opens up with storage inside.

Hi again. I've taken some more photos.
Karemore55 - I wasn't keen on putting furniture in front of the door but my husband thought it would be ok. I just needed some other opinions. The rug you mentioned is actually in a bit of dead space - it's a pathway from the hall to the back doors.
Gail wolverton - the couches will definitely go to the kids rooms. I hadn't even considered that!!
dimensions are as follows : length (to end of carpet) is just under 5600mm, width approx 4200mm (at far end) and 5400 as it widens out

Ottoman... table in front off sectional that opens for more storage
  • 13 years ago
I cannot see a use for light colored...large end tables in this room unless you stacked them and used them for storage in corner...but you would need to secure /fasten them in that position d/t little ones

So I'm thinking, if you do get a sectional or sofa with chaise, centre it on the large rug right about where it is now. Unless the photo angles are making things appear different, I think you could squeeze in the sectional and have the TV between the windows as Gail says, and have that space line up with middle of sectional without being too far over toward the kitchen. Before you buy a sofa/sectional, make sure you have dimensions so you can mark off the outline it will have so you know it will work. You will definitely want some curtains on those windows so you don't have sun glaring at you when you're watching TV. I also wonder if you should have the sectional (if that's what you get) so that the L is formed at the far end of the room; that is, where the other window is. And the toy bins, etc. could go behind the sofa in the area of the door you were wondering about. This way, its easy for babe to wander over there and for you to see him/her, yet the mess is still somewhat concealed.

Karemore & Gail - thank you so much for your input. I am new to posting on Houzz and I am amazed at your generosity with your time and opinions. My ideas are clearer now. I will post another photo when I have some new furniture. Time to go shopping!!
