D.A. bareroot roses shipping - zone 5 ?

Coming up on the 1st week of May, and still no rose! I've gotten a few update emails saying your roses will be shipping blah blah blah but no date. Is this normal for them? I've ordered bareroots from them before, and IIRC they've shipped in April, but in fairness I'm not convinced my memory is serving well.

I called DAR and explained to them that my rose was going next to a wall that would get intense heat in a very short time because that’s what happens in the Far North where I live. I asked them if they would be willing to please ship it out soon so it would have a chance to get started. I told her that I had been growing DAR for many years, that I plant early and bury the canes, and found that this method works best. The customer service rep said that she appreciated my honesty about why I wanted the rose. It was here within 10 days.

I have planted roses in 100 degree heat and had them thrive. Here is what I did. I planted them deep, 3-4 inches below the dirt line (own root or grafted, doesn’t matter) and watered them halfway during planting and again when the hole was full. Then I put the dirt up the canes for insullation.

I then put up copper pipe on each side of the roses and put garden quilts https://www.gardeners.com/buy/gardenquilt-floating-row-cover/8610412.html (NEVER PLASTIC, IT INCREASES THE HEAT) to shade the roses. I clipped the quilts onto the copper with clothes pins. Make sure to leave the top and sides open a bit so the heat can escape. Then I left it that way until the heat wave was over and the roses were growing on their own. I moved the dirt off the canes and uncovered them on a cloudy day. I think the quilt was they key because it allows 70% of the sun to come through, but protects from the heat.

I am in zone 7 and still havent recieved my roses either. I’ve never ordered from them before, so I don’t know how they usually do it. But I am concerned too.

Two springs ago when I got my DA shipment it was I think in the last week of May, right as we got a week long heatwave. I remember being upset because it was so late to get them and both roses from that order did very poorly that first year.

So far my David Austin roses have been a disappointment compare to the other bare roots I received. The plants are short, delivered dry. Paying a good amount of money and receiving plants that are slightly better than the cheap bag roses is ridiculous. I’m not going to buy from them again. The ones I received will make it but they are too tiny. i’m in zone 4 and received them this weekend.

You're in zone 4 and you received before me in zone 5?!? AAARGHH!!

I've not been disappointed with quality of DA bareroots before, but something seems to be up with the shipping this year. Maybe I should call on it.

You might have to @porkchop_z5b_MI, mine came on the right time, eventhough it’s still pretty cold here. i’m not saying they are bad, but for example i got my Palentine roses at the same time,and they were cheaper, and compared to most of my DA roses they are huge.

I looked back at one of the emails and it said preparing to ship week of May 1st. If I don't get a shipping confirmation by end of next week I'll call.

with ANY PLANTS... if they come too early.. or too late.. you POT THEM UP.. and hold them until the next proper planting season ...

its so freakin simple.. yet it took upwards of 20 years to figure it out.. lol ...

soooo.. too early.. pot them.. put them in the garage. and harden them off until spring catches up ... so you dont get frost damage on plants shipped from down south ..

or if its already too hot.. or soon to be.. hold them until fall ... just like you hold every bargain plant you buy in july and august...

I just called on it -- won't ship until tomorrow or early next week = mid-May arrival. I am *not* happy about this. The lady on the phone admitted it should have shipped mid-April. If I don't get a shipping notification by early next week I'm going to call back and cancel. It's way past bare-root season up here already. *$^!%!#

And Ken -- I get what you're saying but this is NOT a bargain plant. This is a full-price, bare-root rose that was not shipped at the proper time. My complaint is valid, especially in light of the fact that another poster in zone 4 (4!!) received his rose already.
