IMO this question is what is aked when shelves are built with no plan as to what they are needed for.I do not like family pics in public places, IMO the fewer things all of which have meaning to you is the best . So Wht do you have that is special to you besides famitly pics.. I t also is a fact that you have 2 of theses shelving pieces so double the eye clutter . Can we see the whole space that is a good idea always when posting here I like a piece of art to replace shelving when there is no really special stuff to display. Post the pic of the whole space then we get a better idea of your style. Post the pic here in a comment DO NOT start another post .

I think the bottom shelf is good.

The middle shelf is a bit dark. I would add something white in place of that small ball. Maybe a pretty light colored scented candle.

For The top shelf, I think I would start over. There are a lot of leveled items. I think it’s too busy ….

Could be fun to put in some temporary wallpaper in the back of the bookcases to amp it up a bit - maybe something with blacks and caramels that you have in the room — if you fall in love with a permanent wallpaper you can mount it on foam board cut to fit
