My backyard oasis dilemma- travertine and pool tile

Hello,

I’m refinishing our backyard and pool and putting in Ivory Travertine decking and coping (1,600sqft). We have not decided plaster color (stonescapes, pebble tech or similar) or waterline tile. Generally I like a neutral look, maybe with some interest, but because I don’t know what the color of the water will be, is it better to find a waterline tile that is close to the color and tone of the travertine deck? (Samples in pictures below)

Are there any tried and proven color combos recommended for Ivory Travertine?

Are you set on the lighter color? We had that in FL and I hated the light decking...it always looked dirty!

I am in FL and I love the lighter colors for our pool/lanai pavers, but most of ours are under a screen cage. I also didn't want to look out the house and have some bright tile colors catch your eye.

    Hi

Yes we want light colored deck. We first looked at limestone because we love the crisp white tone but that will be too blinding we’re told. (We’re in Houston, TX). The Ivory travertine is still fairly light, and does not have a ton of variation, and should also not show first as much as the limestone. Another option we looked at was ceramic tile in 24” x 48”, but they become much hotter to walk on than the travertine.

We love a clean, modern, minimalistic look, and we’ve worked on the inside of the home to reflect that. Outside, it’s still a typical 1998 subdivision brick/siding home.. so the material choices and colors for the pool area need to marry to two to some degree.

Chispa- thank you, your pool look amazing! It’s confirming that I want to stay neutral and tone-on-ton with my materials.

I like the pool deck at the ParkMGM in Las Vegas. It's a pale desert blush tone. Very nice in person, and very soothing. Not too hot or too bright.

Thanks Lindsey- appreciate the feedback. I want to stay neutral and pick a waterline tile that is complimentary to both the coping and the water color. Because I don’t know yet which plaster color to use, I’m leaning towards whites/creams that are close in tone to the coping. My installer is great but they are hardly designers but with many years of experience they have made some suggestions.. unfortunately their style lean very warm and rustic (I’m in TX) with lots of rust tones, browns and royal blues, which is not my aesthetic at all and why I’m trying to pick materials myself.

We are in the same boat in North Houston with an builder that does more bouldery/Texas design and not the look we are after. Also going with extra light ivory travertine for the coping and have a water feature/wall which will have ledgerstone on it and three small stainless scuppers. Looking at a darker and lighter grey 6”x24” for the waterline tile. The ledger marries the the grey and beige tones together and the water and landscaping will be the colorful element. Attaching an inspo picture and the finishes we are looking at with ivory travertine.

Jessica, lovely inspiration pics! Have you decided your plaster color yet?

I am waffling on that right now! Our material will be pebblesheen but not sure of color yet. I like medium blue water color but we have a large tanning ledge in our design and I don't really want it to be dark. I'm looking at french grey and slate blue since these are a lighter grey. What about you?

Same issue, I don’t want the tanning ledge to look gloomy. Friends of ours have French grey and I loved the water color, but not the tanning ledge. It looks grey and dull. I think we’ll go with white or a lighter blue color for the plaster. We’ll use stone scapes mini pebble. They have option to add iridescent glass beads and abalone shells for additional sparkle. Still waiting to see how much extra $$& that’ll be… :S

Did you end up going with the ivory travertine? Currently doing a pool remodel in Houston and wondering where you sourced from? I am also wanting a very light color.

I did! And we love it. We found best quality/price ratio at Distinct Stone Solutions (DSS) on Brittmore.
