Looksie Looksie it is Jimmy Hoffa

I guess like most older homes, it should not come as a surprise but yesterday i found a hidden room in the house we just bought.

I had finished up the crown molding on the master closet on Tuesday so yesterday I hoed into revamping the library. Off to the side was this weird cat house that had one and a half million screws affixing carpet to wood. with a peak behind i could see a sizeable room.

It should not have come as a surprise as it was located under the stair case landing. I think we will hide it with a swing out bookshelf, but other than that i am not sure.

A place to hide all my guns?

A hidden access point for the basement?

Not really sure? i am just glad I did not find Jimmy Hoffa down inside there.

I have no context so whatever you decide I guess . My question is have you ever renovated before this IMO should have been uncovered way before trim added in the grand scheme of things

It is not unusual to have spaces under stair landing for us with basments. The size just depends on the staircase layout. Our last house it housed our furnace and hot water heater. Our present house we use it for storage. I've seen people finish off the inside and make little club houses for their kids. As long as it stays dry, with a hidden door, it would be a good place to hide guns.

Oh for sure. I have a few houses that I own, one of which is older than this one, and one I built from the ground up. that included getting gravel from my pit to make the concrete and felling the trees to saw into lumber to build the house.

This house was strange. It is very sound but the previous owner was very afraid of height and not a great finish carpenter. Our plan is to go room by room finishing a apace before we move on. There are just so many missing details in every room that it is overwhelming.

With so much to do, we have just concentrated on the rooms we use the most. As a writer, I am in the library a lot writing my next novel. Or a long winded post on Hauzz!! 😀😀😀

    @Jilly

In Maine there was an old ship called the Cora Cressey that had quite a life during the prohibition days.

I built one of my houses, and while that was not situated where I could have a hidden room in it, I was able to add a few hidden storage areas. It ran the gamut of being not-so-hard to find to being nearly impossible to ever know. It is kind of a fun thing to do with houses because there is always wasted space in every house.

I was thinking maybe floor it, put in new insulation batts, plank the walls with shiplap and install a few lights and outlets.

I am not sure on the moisture levels but probably not high in an old house. I would say low enough for gun storage i would think.

I'd make it into my husband's office. He loves tiny cave like nooks under stairs. He always wanted one as an office.

Well, I was finally able to get a weekend off, the first since the first of March and sadly without any days off in between. I was good though, went to church on Sunday, but on Saturday I was able to build the bookshelf that hides the entrance to this hidden room.

The bookshelf itself is pretty basic, but due to a design issue I had to add some trim that is held in place with magnets, then fabricate the all important; tilt-out-a-book-to-unlatch-the-bookshelf-from-the-wall-latch. I got that to work, and so the library just has a few more details and it will be done. (We plan to re-sand the hardwood floors when most of the construction work is done for the whole house).

As for details to be done in this room, I got some trim to add, but before I do, it is a great place to route wire for more outlets. I am sure everyone with an old house knows, "there is never enough outlets". I want to add a few more before that trim gets put into place.

(Pictures are on another device and will be added soon)

I did notice taking thid picture that i need to paint match the printer stand, and the second coat on the bookcase, but its an improvement from when we bought the house.
