need a picture of the other side of the room too. Does he need a desk? Somewhere for his clothes? What are his favourite colours (blue and red?), hobbies... ?

Would a bed with trundle bed be a good solution?

If he needs more storage, consider adding (Ikea) kitchen cabinets above the bed. Or shelves along that whole wall. You could do a large design on the wall opposite the bed. There are world maps for example that fill that entire wall. Or a large wall mural or decal reflecting his favourite sport...

Great ideas. Love the world map. Thought about a loft bed, but the ceilings are 8ft and he's gonna be a big boy.

From my experience you need longer bed, double bed is same length as single. If your son is going to be tall that won’t be enough. They grow so fast, it could happen in two years that you will need to get rid of double bed. We decided to buy Ikea Beddinge and my son loves it, It is comfortable and LONG.

First off, make sure he is part of the process - we did my son's room last year, when he was 12 and we had a great time doing it together. We both enjoyed it, and he learned a lot. We ended up choosing a captain's bed with storage drawers below. He originally wanted a baseball mural, but when we considered the various sports posters, shelving for trophies and a place to display/hang his hat collection he also wanted, we knew the mural wouldn't work because you can't display anything on that wall. He ended up chosing a deep red and blue color scheme to coordinate with his favorite team's colors. The flooring was the only thing I picked, as I wanted something that would last beyond the baseball room theme. He picked everything else from furniture to bedding to window treatments, but with me giving him guidance, and keeping an eye on the budget. He loves his "man cave" now!

Fun! Take him to the paint store and let him grab paint chips of the colors he likes. This side pull down bed is pretty cool. Because it is sideways it is easier for a teen to handle. And then all the storage up above is great! Would it be feasible to turn his door into a pocket door? This just frees up so much space. This desk could be put under the window so it can fold down when he needs to get in the closet. Hang a sconce to the left for lighting.

You could use something like this and as A Crew of Two has suggested add more storage overhead! but If he is quite tall you can buy long single or king single beds which are a great idea the long single is 3ft wide and 7ft 10ins long and the King single the same length but a bit wider, and still build lots of storage up to the ceiling, Although I have seen a picture of a bed that can be a bed at night and roll over to become a desk table fantastic will have to see if I can find it! it would be perfect!

6 ft bed lenght is very short. 75"(standard single bed length) is ok for those who are not taller than 5'5" .
XL twin should be safe option but it is harder to find bed frames and bedding.

Your right the long single is at least 7ft 10ins! I had to buy these as my sons are both around 6ft tall!
