Most likely potato, we had some small potatoes that I throw into compost pile. I guess probably pull them out since they probably would produce tiny potatoes?

Provided that they are potaotes, the size of the 'seed' would have no bearing on the crop. Small pots are invariably young tubers lifted along with the larger ones.

you have suggestions of DEADLY nightshade.. and potato.. i think you better confirm the ID before you do much of anything with whatever you dig up ... in other words dont eat it until you confirm ..

btw.. EVERY part of a potato is poisonous.. except the spud... go figure on that ...

lets see a pic when it blooms.. flowers usually help these gurus hone in on an ID...

in 45 years of gardening.. i have found only one valuable plant that free seeded itself into my garden... most weed come out the back end of a bird.. like the nightshade ...

i cant say i ever used a compost pile.. so maybe the odds increase a bit since it might be something you thru in the pile. but i would expect cuke of squash family seedlings by the billions... but then.. im up here in ground freeze MI .. and your pile in z8 works different than mine might ..

There was no suggestion of DEADLY Nightshade. Nightshade family does not = Deadly Nightshade but it does include both tomatoes and potatoes And this plant is not DN in a million years. Looks totally different. You do not need to wait until autumn to know if it is potato or tomato. The former will have white flowers, the latter yellow. If they are potatoes you can dig in late spring as small new potatoes or wait until the foliage dies down to get larger maincrop potatoes.

p.s. Ken, if you've never had a compost pile that is a terrible shame. You've spent 45 years taking nutrients out of your soil and throwing them away.

I apprecite Ken's rightous passion. I do agree with Floral that 45 years no compost seems a shame. I'm curious if Ken is too handsome to be flipping a compost pile? 😃 

I will definitely update when bloom, with the hot weather recent and coming weeks, I imagine it would happen in a few weeks.
