Can’t decide backsplash tile

Hello! I’m mid-kitchen renovation and I cannot pick a backsplash tile. None of them seem right! I’m currently torn between a warm gray (greige?) elongated subway tile, or a sage green fluted tile. I’d like to take the backsplash up to the height of our vent hood. On the long wall where the sink is, there will be 2 tower cabinets that go counter to ceiling once our counters are installed. Counters are a Brazilian arabescus marble.

Some background: 110 year old house, recently renovated to feel historic with modern touches.

II guess I’m mostly looking for validation that the gray/green fluted tile won’t look too busy and compete with the floors for attention. Thanks!

There’s quite a bit of pattern in both the counters and floor. My own preference would be to keep it simple and not add more pattern.

"II guess I’m mostly looking for validation that the gray/green fluted tile won’t look too busy and compete with the floors for attention."

It will look too busy. Not just with the floors, and the patterned counter, but you've got fluting on the apron sink. Enough with the fluting.

And, the objective of a backsplash is so that when things splash against it, you can wipe it off. How are you going to do that with a fluted tile?

It is always best to hold off on the backsplash decision entirely until the kitchen is installed. Once the counters and the rest of the cabinetry are installed, the kitchen will look different. If you make a backsplash choice before that, it is highly likely you will make a mistake. Then your choices will be rip it out or live with a backsplash that looks wrong. So, wait to make the backsplash choice.

I agree with @M Miller on waiting. ^

the green, as is , looks a little muddy for your application. Is your goal an overall green tone? The window treatments will also alter the overall color/feel.

Please post photos after counters are installed. You have specified your tips to be scribed to the wall without the matching 4” splash - yes?

    Wise advice!

@thinkdesignlive that’s correct - I’m not bringing the slab up at all.

Thanks for the input everyone! I think I’m getting restless because I’ve been without a functioning kitchen for over a month at this point. With counters being installed this coming week, I’m getting excited about crossing the finish line!

In regards to the counters also being busy - the slab definitely is, but because of the countertop tower cabinets, a lot of the swirls will be hidden, so that hasn’t been too much of a concern for me. Here’s the counter layout with a very rough sketch of what won’t show.

black/white..... and grays [counter]...so far. what is the copper brown square for? I dont see how the greige color fits with anything. please clue us in. the elongated or any white subway would be my pick......the warm hardware is enough of a tweak , I wouldnt try to layer in any greige . If you are trying to match the wall paint I wouldn't . There are cool shades of green to work well with everything, if you dont want white subway.

@herbflavor The wood block? It’s the color sample block for the cabinets. The brass latch is the cabinet hardware.

Do a traditional white subway tile. If you want you can add a black liner to tie it all together.

You can use your kitchen without a backsplash. Definitely wait and then post photos of your top contenders lined up along the backsplash. Make sure all final lighting is in as well. That’s the best way to do it. Even if you go with a simple subway it’s best to just wait and have all elements in place.

its hard to visualize the tower cabinets in the coppery shade/stain. I'd certainly wait on the backsplash .

If you are set on that slab, then don't go with a fluted tile because you don't need more texture and movement. i like the green idea, but pick a larger sage green tile, and it'll look nice if you have a plant somewhere to warm up the space. White subway would also go since you have white in your floors, but no greige.
