@Boe Dower You didn't describe the bugs, so all we can tell from the image is they're long and narrow, I think. Look up life cycle of thrips and compare to what you can see. Look for nymphs too (on the leaves).

Have you used anything to "clean" the leaves other than plain water? sprayed the plant or treated it with any product (used dishsoap on the leaves?)?

In most cases, severe insect infestations and diseases can be linked to poor root health. When plants are struggling, synthesis of chemicals that ward off insect herbivory or disease pathogens always get short shrift, which makes the plants targets. We need to know how long you've had the plant, how you tell when it's time to water and how you water, if your plant's pot has a drain hole, if your home utilizes a water softener that uses salt as the exchange medium, how you fertilize ...... an overall description of your entire care regimen. The answers to what you're asking require deductive reasoning on our part, which doesn't work w/o input.
