Cut them back. They can take it. Nepeta😴 There are nicer plants in Lamiaceae? Catnip is weedy and shows up EVERYWHERE.

Totally, Be brutal and shear it within an inch of it's life - it will thank you for it and you will still get a later flush of bloom.

A bit harsh, Jay...but I have to agree that there are at least nicer nepetas than WL.

'Walker's Low' is known for that - it is the nature of the beast :-) In fact, more than one website describes it as having a decumbent growth habit, which describes this exact condition.

A hard pruning in late winter may help as could dividing the clump(s). Otherwise, cutting back hard (to 3-4 inches) after the primary bloom period will regenerate the appearance and encourage a rebloom. Or you might want to consider replacing with one of the dwarf and much more compact cultivars now on the market.

btw, Walker's Low is not the slightest bit weedy as it is a sterile hybrid. And catmint is a different plant than catnip!!

Yeah, but are nicer plants $3 a pot at end of the year clearance? I need something in this area that is deer proof, rabbit proof, drought loving and in need of cr@ppy soil and all day sun. Cheap and cheerful - providing early season color and asking for nothing in return. This is my most neglected bed and only serves as decoration atop a retaining wall. When WL isn’t splaying, it looks fabulous here.

gg, I had read about the habit of WL, but thought that by doing all the right things (neglecting it and siting in full sun), I could avoid the splaying. Not so.

Looks good on a slopey bank when you can encourage it to sprawl in the same direction at least...Best of all, up hard against a wall (where I also allow centranthus to hold sway). I don't love nepetas cos I hate the smell but they do perform a useful service.

Thanks, rosaprimula! It’s interesting how different people are - I love the smell of nepeta and now have Cat’s Pajamas also. I also purchased calamintha - smells equally great - and the pollinators go crazy over it too.

Wonder if a peony ring would work to keep it more upright, the kind with a grid.

I will have to watch the sprinkler pattern in that area…WL didn’t splay until my hubs turned the lawn irrigation on for the season.
