What to do with the fireplace tile?

We are planning to lighten up our newly purchased very blue house to be whiter, brighter, lighter. Below is my house, a very similar house to mine but more in line with the colors I plan to paint, and then some design/style ideas for our living room. We are planning to move away from blue - the rug will have pinks, purples, olive green, and maybe a little blue but certainly not the focus. I think the existing blue/gray/brown fireplace tile will be a total eye sore. What can we do about that? Can it even be painted/white washed if we plan to USE the fireplace? Any inexpensive options that would be a suitable fix or band aid for the intermediate term? TIA!

The fireplace inner tile, goes well with your flooring and it goes well with the counters. I would leave the fireplace and not do anything with it, until you repaint in your own choice of colors.

Can you replace the tile? I'd go with a marble in whites/grays:

I agree with cat — I’d leave it for now and see how it looks after your other changes. I think the colors and other things you’re planning will look great with it. It’s so much more interesting than white.

yes you can DIY paint tile. clean and prime and use a good latex paint that can withstand 180*

I would leave it and see what you think or paint it but you got to get special paint and I wouldn't do white and marble can stain so I would choose a different color something neutral like black charcoal or a gray maybe cuz your wall looks Gray

I agree with the others. Replace everything you plan to first. Then worry about the fireplace. Because it goes with the floors , countertops, and it might even go with the rug you like.

Thanks for this feedback, I guess we will leave it until we have the walls repainted and buy our rug and living room furniture, etc. I just can't picture it working with any of my design/style ideas like the below (but lighter walls/less contrast between wall and trim). :-(

The tile is fine. My question would be what to do with the t v!

Can you install it over the fireplace?

If so, consider leaving the tile; choose the rug in your first photo; paint the walls B.M. Gray Owl.

It looks to me that it would work well with the tile.

No tv over the fp! Long wall for tv, bookcases under windows. Couch or chairs to right parallel

@happyleg, why no t v over the fireplace? And, why the exclamation point? A retort?

It looks like the viewing distance is fine with furniture arrangement and t v only needs 10" or so up off the mantle; it looks like it is gas burning. Moving it there will give @Kate Spadaro the opportunity to install cabinets on either side of the fireplace, as in the photo I posted.
