Recessed lighting layout assistance

Are there rules to follow when laying out lighting across odd shaped rooms - or do you treat each area as an individual area for lighting? Our existing kitchen lighting was done 12 years ago with 6, 4" recessed, 2 eyeballs directed towards stove and sink + 2 pendants over work island (left side on drawing). Eating area (Right half) only had ceiling fan light (it's staying) and fixture over basement steps. Plan is to add 4, 4" recessed in the eating area however they will not be aligned with existing (but layed out withing the space) creating a asymetrical arrangement. Thoughts?
