Why do you think it needs a pruning? And why does it seem to be planted in a crater, with the rootball so far below the soil level?

Thanks for responding... I am actually not sure how to achieve good growth of this plant. And hence, looking for advise to make sure I am able to do whatever needs to be. I want it go grow more vertically.

Its just the angle of the camera that makes it feel being inside a crater. Its more of a boarder of stones around it, with plant being at the ground level.

i think i see plastic under overturned sod.. if so.. remove it immediately ...

its going to take a newly planted shrub.. a year or three to put down and grow a mature root mass.. and while it is doing that.. it really shouldnt be pruned.. except for removing or fixing damage ..

googling you plant.. and scrolling thru pix.. makes me wonder if this plant is properly sited.. it looks like it has vast potential ... like 10 feet tall by same wide... is this a few feet from the curb of the street???

we prune to accomplish a goal.. when you cant ID a goal .. then you dont prune.. its isnt done just for the heck of it..

sooo you have some here to find a goal.. and it doesnt appear gal or i can ID a goal.. so let think about it again in the fall ... unless you decide to move it...

Here is a diagram of what the planting should look like. If a woody plant is planted too deeply, it will have poor growth and can even decline over the years.
