One of the ”left-behinds” when we moved was the clematis. I don’t know how old it was when we moved into that house, but it was spectacular. This current house just doesn’t have a spot for clematis.

Mine finished blooming a month or two ago, and don't look that good anyway.

These pictures were taken a few summers ago from my lake house. The first, taken in June, with the rhodo's blooming. The second, in August. That clematis got quite large growing all over the porch railing. One of my favorites!

All my early season clematis have finished flowering and the later ones are only getting ready to start. So none of my own currently to show you. But I can share this marvelous monstrosity growing nearby. It's a form of montana rubens and was blooming in April.

gardengal, I've always wanted montana rubens, but it doesn't seem to seel around here. Although looking at the size of this one, I'm not sure I'd have a place for it!

C. montana is not the hardiest of species, so less common in zones below 7 (But hardy to 5). And the one in the photo is maybe not properly characteristic of this vine as it is about twice the size they normally attain.

oops - omitted the purple one. We ordered a jackamii superba but they substituted this.

For those who asked. Yes just one, that was very happy, for a number of years. Really missed it this spring.

Mine have peaked already so these are from a few weeks ago. one is still blooming pretty well though.

There are so many beautiful types! Bumblebeez, I am currently redoing one of my front beds, and feeling a bit lost with what to put in. Your photo inspired me to think about including a clematis there!

Outside - you're right. The white one is Candida. We're back home and I checked my plant files. It's really a showy plant, the flowers are so large you can easily see them from the street.

We also have a huge sweet autumn clematis but it doesn't look like much in the spring.

jlsch, no idea...the landscaper chose it...I just asked for clematis.

nicole, it is a Multi-Blue and I would guess it must be about 8-10 years old. Unfortunately, it is in the side yard, and not seen as often as I'd like. It gets about 6 hours of sun. I'm in zone 5.

These two went in ground last summer & had a tough time then. I’m happy to see they survived & are flowering though they seem to be blooming one flower at a time! Next year should be much better.

This pink one has been in ground @ 7 years & this is last year’s pic. It is full of buds but hasn’t broken bloom yet - gets morning sun until @ 1:30 so always later bloom.

jlsch...I'm also zone 5. I had a trellis that looked so empty....barren.......I went back and purchased a Multi Blue. The Monrovia tag says zone 4...and the HUGE blooms....Oh MY!!!!!!!.

These are all so gorgeous! I don’t think I have a good spot for one. Our side yard is mostly our vegetables, and I don’t otherwise have decent sun to plant.

GScience - that's the opposite of our situation. Our sunniest spot is in front of the house so that's where we planted the clematis. The rest of the yard has more shade from the trees and woods behind the house. We have herbs on the patio wall but have given up on tomatoes. For a few years we tried patio tomatoes so that we could move them as the sun changed during the summer but the squirrels would eat them.

Maire_cate, our front faces west but we have a very large ash tree out front that is healthy and we treat to help prevent ash borer. So, in the front I use plants that don’t need as much sun. We do tomatoes in containers on the deck and the raised beds on the side. We used to have them off the back of the deck, but that area doesn’t get as much sun anymore, and we need to keep things from the deer. i love the trees but they make planting a little more challenging.

The Multi Blue bloom is gorgeous. I bought one from Donahue's this spring but it is not doing well.

I have to include one of my favorite new ones. The color seems to be bluer in person. It's Jenny from Brushwood. I think it's a Jackmanii type. Mine has been in a lot of shade but apparently has enough vigor to reach into the sun now. It has not been watered much but seems pretty tough. In person the color seems to me more of a denim blue with white.
