Most species tulips are reliably perennial. And many gardeners have good luck with the Darwin hybrids.

Tulip bulbs must have very good drainage if they remain in the garden during their summer rest period. And the bulbs that will form will probably be smaller but more numerous. They will then grow larger until reaching flowering size, and those ones will give you more flowers. Might not be the following year, but they will deliver.
