Design advice on new kitchen cabinet - knobs or pulls?

We are building a 4 drawer cabinet in the corner of our kitchen. It’s cherry, custom, and while it will complement our existing kitchen cabinets it won’t be a complete match. Should I put knobs or pulls on the cabinet drawers? Or a combo? I initially thought that knobs would work because I don’t want to try to match my existing 21 year old IKEA pulls, but my cabinet maker suggested pulls for the larger drawers. Also, how many pulls or knobs on larger drawers? Thanks!

The person who assisted us with putting together our kitchen cabinet selections suggested one large pull in the middle of the drawer. You're likely to pull more evenly with one pull versus two knobs or two pulls. They said the habit would be to pull on one versus two pulls/knobs, in doing so it would be an uneven stress on the drawer.

I would never advocate for knobs because they catch on my pockets and they look like polka dots. According to your rendering all I see is a suit because the knobs look like buttons.

Since you have pulls on the rest of your cabinets and you know that this particular system won't quite match, if you put pulls on you'll try to limit the possible unmatch whereas if you put knobs on you're saying it doesn't match and that's ok because this is a distinctive set.

Honestly you have so many cabinets and drawers, I'd have to change all of the pulls and knobs to a color that blends in with the cabinets. That amount of hardware is distracting.

Thanks. Are you saying that pulls in a different design are better than knobs?
Also I’d put smaller pulls on the 2 top drawers and bigger (and placed in the middle) of the 2 larger drawers.
Much appreciated! Someday we will update the main kitchen!

Pulls on drawers, and one large pull is preferable. If it were my kitchen, I wouldn't try to match the existing hardware at all. Since it's a custom piece make it stand out. Just a thought.

And it's hard to say, without seeing the space as a whole. Maybe post another photo, thanks.

Great photos, thank you. I like the suggestion to add knobs to the drawers. Or what if I put smaller pulls on each small drawer? Since the rest of the kitchen has matte black pulls, what if I change the metal to a on my new piece to a bronze or brushed nickel? Or stick with matte black and get a textured/patterned pull? Photos of space for new cabinet (boxes) and part of kitchen.

I love the uniformity and pattern created by my all knob drawers. Some say pulls are more ergonomical, but I have a bad back and am better off using two hands spaced apart to pull open these large drawers. The top row I can easily open with one hand.

We are finishing up a guest suite that will be used by my aging parents who have arthritis. We mixed and matched deep pulls and large knobs that are easier to grasp.

Will your cabinets be shaker or flat panel? I think some pulls end up looking busy if there are a lot of shaker lines involved.

Show a drawing with dimensions of the new cabinet. A single pull centered on a drawer is ONE motion, one hand. Hard to advise minus a drawing.

A BLACK cabinet could have been great in there......It's not going to match existing anyway : )

I dislike knobs (or pulls with stub ends vs closed ends) because they catch on my pockets or belt loops, so I would do single pulls.

I prefer a combination of knobs and pulls on cabinets (pulls for drawers and knobs for cabinets). None of my base-cabinet knobs have ever caused an incident with anybody's clothing. I've heard that pulls with ears can be a problem, but I have never had any trouble with knobs in 65 years of working in kitchens with knobs on lower cabinets. My current knobs stick out 1" for reference.

Pulls of different sizes are perfectly fine to use on your new cabinet.

Pulls are far more user friendly for Universal Design. Knobs of any size take much more grasping ability than do pulls. The zillion different sizes thing comes from very Modern style kitchens, using bar pulls to accent the linearity of using all drawers, and is a very recent intrusion into kitchen design. It's based on design looks, not function. People used 3" or 4" pulls forever, even on large drawers. Those size pulls now look "small"" to our eyes, due to the trend of using oversized pulls on everything. But, people have also grown larger, and those "oversized" pulls fit larger hands better. Your best bet is to measure your hand size, and don't choose anything smaller than it would take for a full grasp.

I like Jan's idea of a different color for thi new cabinet. It's going to be different anyway, so maybe make it really different, and have fun with it.

We toyed with that in the beginning but since the new cabinet sits away from the others and because we will probably reface the existing cabinets, we stayed with cherry. We are only putting in flat front drawers so no trim. One thing leads to another!

If this cabinet is away from the others, all the more reason to make it different. It might then look like a piece of furniture or a small hutch...

Sounds like you've already purchased the wood? Could you do a darker stain, or is that something you'd be interested in at all? Ebony perhaps?

Pretty cabinets! If you want to tie the looks of new and old pulls together without trying for an exact match, Emtek Select lets you mix and match metals in each pull or knob. So for example, if you have another metal in your kitchen (like brushed nickel faucet or gold light fixtures), you could do a mostly black pull with brushed nickel or satin gold on the ends, or vice versa. Or solid black pulls and knobs with black and marble, etc. This might give you some ideas and flexibility with your new hardware. (These are just pictures I copied from the Emtek site.)
