The back of the leaves have sawfly larvae eating and creating the holes. If I see the holes, I'll look for them and then fold the leaf over the larvae and squish it. But it looks like you have a lot.

I have one of these water spray nozzles that has like 8 different sprays...Certain settings work great spraying off roses with water.... Spray to allow enough time for leaves to dry before nightfall...Spray tops and underside of leaves carefully..I do not spray roses with water if it has lots of blooms...

OR hand pick sawfly larvae off roses leaves...

If you no longer see any sawfly larvae they may be already gone for the season... Each area is different on when they leave and how many generations they produce...

I had something similar happening to one of my roses last week. I hosed them off while rubbing the leaves at the same time (while wearing gloves). Fortunately, I got to it fast before it spread to the other roses and the rose seems to be okay now.

I believe pic # 3 is a spotted lantern fly nymph.

I recommend giving the rose bushes a thorough water spray to combat aphids and sawflies.

I have done some rose consulting for removal if pests on roses. You have the typical saw flies laying eggs on the leaves. then the green larvae (green wor—like) characters eat the leaves. When you see these types of holes-it is saw flies. They are very common in most rose gardens.

Best ways to remove them from the garden….

Treat your soil first of beginning of season with organic or chemical pesticides. I am using Ecologic Mint granules throughout the season as they remove most pests. Sevin granules work for several months, also also.

After you see leaves with holes then it’s time to pinch off all effected leaves because it will reduce the amount of insects eggs hatching & an aroma they send off to draw more insects to damaged leaves. then soray leaves. There are nany organic sprays… Neem and more. Sevin, again is very effective.

Whether you use organic methods or chemical methods, treating the soil and plants is recommended. In the future if you only have a few sawflies squishing them works. Best Wishes!

The conventional spray of choice with gardeners who find insecticides (conventional method=softens the meaning of laboratory formulated), the last choice if all other less toxic methods are ineffective is Bayer Advanced Complete Insect Killer, at 1 T. per gallon. It is a systemic spray, usually requiring a three week later follow-up spray, and thereafter as needed. The main ingredient is Imidacloprid. It could be banned in NY State?

The last photo appears to be a Lantern Fly sub-adult. The holes in the leaves are caused by Rose Sawfly larvae. The damage was done earlier and no further damage may be made this year if the variety of Sawfly that did the damage is finished for the year. Usually, with Sawfly larvae damage, action taken at first signs is critical. When damage is already done it may be too late to do anything unless the variety (species), of Sawfly you have there is a continuous, season long breeder, or a later appearing variety.
