Mountain laurel (kalmia) Olympic Fire and Carousel

last modified: 3 years ago

Have two new mountain laurels, a shrub which is new to me. They are Olympic Fire and Carousel.

Anyone have a good estimate of mature size for Olympic Fire? The nursery info said 5' by 5' so that is the amount of space I gave it. Now I am seeing estimates of 8 to 10 feet on various websites... It's a decent size already, came in a six gallon pot.

Also would appreciate any tips. I planted them in a shady spot between an oak and a maple, mixed in a ton of compost, not much clay in this area, put them just an inch or two higher than the surrounding soil. I've heard to watch out for fungus, assuming that will show up as spots on the leaves if it does become an issue? Any other advice? I've heard they can be fussy, so want to make sure they get established well and happy.

Zone 8a tidewater Virginia. Thanks!
