If it was a gift pot bought from a florist, rather than one intended as a garden shrub, it has probably been chemically and culturally manipulated by the grower to be intensely coloured and very bushy with huge flowers. It might even be a group of cuttings posing as a single shrub. If you live somewhere it can be planted in the garden the colour will be less striking next year and the form will be less blobby. But, providing you have acid soil, it will still be an attractive plant.

In addition to what floral has mentioned, the Revolution series of hydrangeas are all selections of bigleaf hydrangea, H. macrophylla. So instead of hybridization per se, you are looking at very selective breeding to achieve a very compact but floriferous plant with an ability to bloom on both old and new wood.

But it is really the grower manipulations in the greenhouse that produce to almost "too good to be true" appearance you see when purchased. As noted, it won't look the same once growing in the garden.

How come you did not post a picture so we could see what you are referring to? Was it the leaves? the bloom? The unusual bi-color nature of the bloom?

I'll admit to being taken by one of this breeder's hydrangeas. Mine is Magical Flamenco. It seems Revolution is their star though, but it wasn't available at the nursery I was at. The draw seems to be the changing colors of the blooms. The breeder is in Europe and I had a hard time finding much talk about them outside of their website. We'll see if it looks like the pictures. Forgot to post a photo--think it was subconsious. Gardengal, I hope that means it will revert to something a little less perfect next year. I have a wild-y, cottage-y thing going in my garden and I think it's feeling too perfect among the imperfect. I have hydrangeas--oak leaf and Annabelle--they look more at home in a woodsy setting, I think. Luis--all of the above. The leaves are a very fake looking green--kind of plastic looking and the two tone blooms do not look like anything that might occur in nature.
