Drilling into top plate, Romex in the way

I'm adding new circuits to my house. I've routed the new Romex to a hole I cut in the ceiling (for convenience of pulling cables) near the breaker panel. I cannot access the top plate from the attic, must drill up from the garage. The problem is a lot of the existing Romex, already going to the panel) is in the way and there isn't enough slack to push it out of the way. The garage door is to the left of the panel, and there isn't much more room to the right (where the same existing Romex already is). Any suggestions for how to protect these cables while I drill through the top plate, or other ideas for workarounds?
