Ashley, your blooms look like many of mine did this spring. I do have thrips, lots of them. I think that was part of the problem so I sprayed Spinosad several times. But I continued to have buds that balled like yours show on your second photo and I didn’t think that was thrips related. I live in a bone dry climate and should NOT have problem with balling, but I did. For me, I finally figured it was a fungal issue and since I sprayed with Immunox, it’s clearing up. I have had quite a number of roses with powdery mildew in spite of a good watering schedule and the balling seemed to be connected with the PM. I hardly ever spray anything in my climate and hope I won’t need to do this in the future, but I did have a lot of roses that were newly planted and I’m hoping once they settle in better the PM won’t be an issue. Obviously the thrips are something I will need to continue to battle.
Interesting note: none of my DA roses had any PM or balling issues. I didn’t expect that after hearing they can be some of the worst.

Thanks for the insight, judybjunebugarizonazn8. It's been a very dry spring here so I shouldn't be having balling problems either! I will try the things you tried and see what happens.

JudyJune, I need your help. I bought Immunox but my eyesight is so poor that I can't read the directions. How much water did you add to how much Immunox?

Sorry, Kristine! I didn’t see your question till now. I use 2 Tablespoons (one fluid oz) per gallon of water. The writing on those labels is so very tiny, it’s a wonder I can still read them without glasses. I wonder why they don’t increase the font size for the mixing directions at least?

I used 1 tsp to a 1.5 Quart water sprayer, Kristine on Immunox.

Maybe there are different concentrations of the stuff? I just went by the label directions.

I think I used less than the directions and it still worked Judi. I bet they are both OK.

did you have a lot of rain? What’s interesting about your blooms is that you have some uneffected. if it was tgeips-they all would be effected. I had sun scorching & too much rain which turmed many of my buds soggy & scorched…. many just turned all brown like yours & balled-which never happened before.

A way to be certain if you have tgrips…. below check tests attached…

Let us know if you need to treat for thrips?
