I think you should be considering an upholstered headboard, but without knowing more about the room I can't say more than that. If you get a white wood bed the natural wood colored chest is going to look like the odd man out. It is really nice though, so I can see why you would want to keep it. What is the flooring? Are you going to paint? Do you have bed linens you're going to use?

It looks like you have two styles going on: newish white wood and older brown wood. The tall chest of drawers and the double bureau match, right? They are the dominant pieces you will be working with. Are you flexible on replacing the white nightstand, perhaps moving it elsewhere in the house?

@gwen1 mixing wood colors can be tricky. How would you feel about adding some  blue-green the room? Perhaps two-tone like a blue spruce tree. Maybe a dark blue spruce on the walls and a light blue spruce for the bed to help it be the focal point. Just a thought. Not like there's a rule.

I agree, cool color tones in here with all the warm wood. And some softness and curves.

An upholstered headboard is soft.

I think mixing woods is no problem if they have something in common as yours do (same era), it's mixing whites, so yes just the one distressed white nightstand.

Instead of another nightstand get something light, unexpected and modern like a metal tray or pedestal table. Black will bring out the hardware in the other piece.

Paint will go a long way in a makeover. Go for a soft soothing blue/green color, Benjamin Moore "Healing Aloe".

@tracefloyd those are pretty colors. We need to find out if @gwen1 wants a soothing bedroom to act as a sleep aid (like most people I guess), or if a happy bedroom that helps with waking up with a positive attitude is more desirable. Personally, I like a mix.
