but you can find other shrubs that are not so over used

sorry, but they are a purple cliche. there are small yak rhodies Some are beautiful

and if you go to the conifers forum (where all the smart people hang out🫤 )they can talk to you about slow growing

Yak is short for yakushimanum. There are many cultivars of the original species.

I just bought two Kalmia latifolia 'Elf' today. They are small unlike the species (3'-4'). Lovely flowers, and once established, it can survive with medium to dry soil. You would need to water for the first year or so. I am in northern Virginia. Clethra is another good choice, but not evergreen.

If you don't mind me asking, what nursery did you get your Elf? I'll be driving through northern VA next week. Mountain laurel are near non-existent for purchase around here. Thanks!
