Thursday's Treasures

last modified: 2 years ago

We got a little more rain last night, and some of the blooms still had raindrops on them this morning. It was a very cool day in the 70s - so unlike what we usually experience this time of year.

Grandma's Smile X Dearest Valentine - The previous two years this evergreen seedling has been first or second of all daylilies here for bud count. But it won't be that way this year. It's gone from having 24-44 buds to having 12-14 this season. As far as height, it's only a bit shorter than usual, from 29 inches to 27 inches. I enjoy seeing it in these two clumps, one has seven fans and the other has five.

Here are a couple of new seedlings in the bed where the squirrels played with the labels.

I know this was a seedling crossed with something. It's likely (Zuzu's Treasure X Dearest Valentine #2) X either Last Snowflake or Believe in Angels.

This next one is one of red seedlings out of Ultimate Sacrifice breeding crossed with either Diver Down or Barbara Mandrell.

This one I can identifiy. (Natalie Antoinette X Symphony of Praise) X Secret of Contentment

Autumn Wood group

Border Blessed

Fancy Lace with another pretty trio.

All of My Love to You

Blue Swallowtail seems to have as many buds now as it did a month ago when it first started to bloom. It has two instant rebloom scapes started while the original ones are still going.

Roman Cohort is doing well this season with tall scapes and about the same number of buds as uusal.

Grandma's Smile X Dearest Valentine is a pretty pink one, The 2nd red seedling is a pretty one. Natalie Antoinette X Symphony of Praise) X Secret of Contentment is pretty and has a lovely watermark. I like Border blessed and Fancy Lace. Roman Cohort has the best season it has ever had very tall and lots of buds and I am glad yours is doing well too.

Fancy Lace keeps churning out pretty blooms! Blue Swallowtail has been looking good for you also. Mine was a victim of the freeze and only had a couple of blooms. I have enjoyed yours. The seedlings all look good but The Ultimate Sacrifice seedling really draws the eye.

Grandma's Smile X Dearest Valentine still has a decent bud count. I am getting plants that normally have good bud count with 5 or less, fewer scapes too. The Ultimate sacrifice seedling is gorgeous. Fancy Lace is gorgeous, I don't think mine is going to bloom at all this year, Oh well, just one of those years. Lost Border Blessed over the winter, but it was never happy here. Autumn Wood is good, few daylilies can match its color so well.

    Debra,

I like Grandma's Smile x Dearest Valentine seedling. My question is about the raised bed that is in the picture. I am looking to do something similar. What are the boards made of? What are the dimensions of your raised beds?

(Natalie Antoinette X Symphony of Praise) X Secret of Contentment is by far my favorite of the seedlings and the named varieties! I love the color and form. Roman Cohort is second.

David - I bought those two raised bed kits from Gardener's Supply Co. several years ago. They, are 3X6 feet, 10 inches deep, and made of recycled plastic and sawdust with aluminum side hardware. They are supposed to last a lifetime, and you never have to paint or stain them. I looked them up today and was shocked to see the price is almost three times what I paid for mine. The same one I originally paid $139 for eight years ago is now $339. That's some amazing inflation and sticker shock!

Brad - I remember you liked that same seedling when it first bloomed three years ago!

Nancy - You are right about many registered daylilies that usualy get good bud count having very few this year. It's just extra disappointing when it's a seedling that's had fantastic performance in the past. Thanks so much for Autumn Wood. I do love the colors on that one. Border Blessed has always done pretty well here.

You know seedlings are my favorite eye candy. Grandma's Smile X Dearest Valentine multi pic reminds me very much of Dearest Valentine. Fancy Lace is a pretty near white. Have you done any crosses with it?

Julia - Fancy Lace is a new one this year for me. So far I've crossed it with pinks, eyed daylilies, and other near whites. Now I have my fingers crossed that the pods will make it to maturity.

Another beautiful post! Your seedlings are beautiful. I especially like the first one.Blue Swallowtail is beautiful. Is it really as white as the picture show? Fancy Lace is a beautiful white one.

Nan - Blue Swallowtail's petal color is an off white. I photographed it in the shade, which makes the petals look whiter than they really are.

Fancy Lace is big and beautiful. I suspect it is in the later (more tender) group of Stamile intros.

Mantis - Fancy Lace doesn't seem as tender as its child, Lightning Round. It was not affected by the December deep freeze or the late March freeze.
