Friday's flowers

Still no rain here. Weirdly enough, many of the late bloomer are putting up scapes. With few buds on scapes and late bloomers blooming early, it going to be a short season.

Named varieties are picking up steam. Here is Brave Kemo Sabe blooming for the first time.

Cherry Pie a la Mode had its first flower yesterday, but the photo I got was blurry (the wind has been strong here). Here's today's flower--not looking very white.

Rosie with a Ring is right beside Cherry Pie a la Mode. Rosie has a bigger eye with more edge. The scapes are shorter than Cherry Pie's. I am not a fan of the recurve on Rosie.

This is Hillside Early Bird. This bird is a bit tardy. Dave Mussar from Canada introduced Hillside Early, H. First Impression, and H. Bright and Early as extra early blooming, usually starting right after Stella. Early Bird has definitely not been that early. It produced scapes at the same time of the others, but the scapes are taller on this one and took more time to develop. It may be the best flower though.

Mayan Warrior was having a good day today.

I am not a big fan of doubles, but Red Hot Miracle is a good one.

This is just a seedling from Sandy Holmes. I don't know the parentage. It is a tet and it is quite tall. That is one of the seedling beds behind it.

I thought I was going to lose that post, but there it is.

Pixie Dragon is a four inch flower.

Possum Que Shane (what a name!) is a vigorous grower with a small flower.

Here are a few seedlings we liked today.

The Queen of the Garden is Gloria Kulpa X Unknown). This is our daughter's seedling.

This is Love All Serve All X (Mary Lena X Crimson Stories). This one and the next one are both large flowers on strong, tall, well-budded scapes.

This is Love All Serve All X Spacecoast Velvet Valentine.

The last two photos show how variable tetraploid crosses can be. Both of these are Burgundy Eye Shadow X Heavenly Tiger Tails. Both parents are deep red with a dark eye. Most of the seedlings looked like the first one.

This was the only yellow in the bunch.It is a slight reverse bitone and may be a future intro. It was the only vigorous one out of the bunch.

Here is one we hope to introduce. Last season it produced three sets of scapes. We hope it continues to do that. It is The Bride of Dracula X Absolute Ripper. Absolute Ripper gives big flowers that weight down the scape. The flower on this one are large but not large enough to weigh down the scape. The color has become more rose, not so coral pink as it was last season. I hope the rose stays.

The Absolute Ripper flower is striking, but I don't like the Hansen-like scape. A far cry from the Hanson candelabra. I wonder how Mayan Prince compares with Pumpkin Prince in regard to opening and height. Pumpkin Prince can be a bit late opening fully in the morning, and it often blooms just above the foliage. Has Mayan Prince avoided these characteristics?

Mayan Warrior looks good, Possum Que Shane may be little but a pretty bloom. Love your daughter's seedling. The next two seedlings have very pretty edges and colors., and big flowers to boot is good. A lot of blooms on that 2nd Burgundy Eye Shadow X Heavenly Tiger Tails seedling. and that Bob is surrounded by a very pretty one.

Brave Kemo Sabe is striking. That looks like a good one for you to use in hybridizing. My other favorites are Mayan Warrior and your daughter's seedling.

Burgundy Eye Shadow X Heavenly Tiger Tails is my favorite of all of these. Nice colors. Brave Kemo Sable is also interesting with that eye. I hope The Bride of Dracula X Absolute Ripper is indeed introduced as you hope.

Mayan Warrior is a nice bloom. Brave Kemo Sabe is different. Love your daughter’s seedling. The Absolute Ripper seedling is a standout in that clump.

Three sets of scapes is truly remarkable (the Absolute Ripper seedling). The seedlings are all interesting. Who can resist that clump shot of the H Tiger Tails seedling?
