Need a reblooming rambler please

last modified: 3 years ago

Looking for a very flexible super bright colored rose. My ideas characteristics are:

  1. Very blackspot resistant
  2. Very flexible like a rambler that can be twisted tightly around a narrow support.
  3. Orange or red preferred but any color will work.
  4. Ideally a rebloomer (once bloomer is ok also)
  5. as big as possible

The only rose I have that meets all my requirements is Mel’s heritage (except in color as I would prefer something brighter that can be seen from far away).

I am Considering red cascade but want to explore other options since I would rather have something more in the orange range/peach range. (I have coral drift already planted in the surrounding area). Sorry I know I am asking a lot

Any suggestions appreciated. Thank you!

Ceske Praci CestCeske Praci Cest!!! After 3 years, Im now getting two flushes, although the second is much smaller. The first cycle lasts multiple weeks. Faint scent, but lovely colouring that varies within the small flower and as it ages. Fabulously healthy and hardy. It has small prickles that enable it to climb in a manner of speaking. It reminds in habit of Mels Heritage in habit. N Very showy.

Lovely rose Vapor and new to me. Where did you get yours from?

    @Paul Barden

Amazing Paul! Mel’s heritage is the absolute best rose in my garden. unless I discover something new to try that could possibly rival that beauty I may just have to use it again. I already have 4 I got from rogue valley a few year ago and that’s why I thought I would ask here for alternatives. You have soo much rose I need to ask you. Do you know of any other roses that compares to Mel’s heritage in health, growth habit and rebloom?

I believe Burling carries that one.

It doesn't rebloom, but Alexandre Girault fits the other criteria. I don't think I have any pictures since it had severe hardiness issues here, and rarely bloomed. It was extremely healthy, and I swear I could have tied knots with the canes.

Alexandre baby here. Mad is right that she is very flexible.

I saw her in Paris and she was huge at Roseraie de l'Hay.

@dianela7analabama Sorry, I forgot you already have Mel’s! Repeating Ramblers with strong colors are scarce. Can’t think of one at the moment. Had you considered ’Crepuscule’?

Super Excelsa is the only thing that comes to mind (what little mind I have left), but it might be too short (the rose, not my mind). My SE tops out at ten or eleven feet, growing straight up into a tree. It's *new* canes are flexible enough to wrap around a support, but not in a tight spiral. You'd have to keep after each cane and wrap it as it grows.

There's a niggling sense in the back of my mind that there's a new single yellow rambler out there, but I can't think of it. I have the same sense that there's a new red repeating rambler, but it just will not come through the fog in my brain this morning, lol.

Dreaming spires is very flexable so far. I have only had two of these for a year, but they fit the description of long flexable canes. Good yellow, good fragrance. Worth trying. Reverance for Roses has good sized plants right now.

@Sheila , I originally read that your Dreaming Spires broke wind regularly!! I need some more coffee! LOL!!!

thank you very much to all for the recommendations. I will look into all of them and do research on their health. It really seems that re blooming yellow/orange rambler type roses are simply not common. I am alright with trying something once blooming at this location or using Mel's heritage again. Like always it is difficult to make a decision because they are all so beautiful.

wWhere is this rose going? How tall does it need to grow? A lovely single that grows into a climber/ramber type is Lemon Zen. LOVED this rose until it got RRD. Wish HMF had some more mature roses pictured. I lost all mine when my phone was hacked . What is not shown in any of thepicturesis the lovely change in colour from yellow to pink very similar to Mutabilis and another one whose name I forget right now. Would Mutabilis work for you? I also adore Ghislaine de Feligonde. Faint repeat, but mine ins in quite a bit of shade. Huge grower with flexible, low-thorn canes.. HMF lists it as 10ft max, but mine is at least 15ft up before spreading out and cane hardy here in Z6. Take a look at some o tf the pics on HMF and youll seethe possiblilities. Againe, not sue of the rebloom. Excusethese typos and gremlins.

Rebloom is not required, it just more like a cool possibility. I am going to shovel prune a MAC I planted in the northeast corner of my lake house because I do not love it. I want a very flexible climber with rope like branches because I want to put it in a very narrow trellis to go up to my 2nd floor balcony railing which is metal. I am hopping to fill up as much as half the railing with it (so 12 feet up and maybe 20 feet horizontally or so)

I need it to be able to be flexible enough to do this like Mel’s heritage on this pole. I am going to look into the options you mentioned Vapor. I am also willing to look into more white blush varieties. My only unbending need is disease resistance to blackspot. The rest are all flexible

All I mentioned are great on BS, which is rampant here. I dont know the mature height of LemonZen as it succombed before it reached maturity. GdeF and CPC would both definitely fit the bill, although CPC has many tiny thorns whille GdeF is practically thorn-free. I find the thorns sometimes help with climbing so long as its completely hardy without the worry of winter die-back pruning.

Upon reading HMF closely, I see that many people get multiple bloom cycles so I think its just the super shay siting of my GdeF. Both are SUPER charming and showy. Not much info on CPCest so dont know about rebloom there. I got GdeF from ARe who no longer carries her. CPC was a gifted rooted cutting from a dear forum member. This rose will root tip root or ground root if given a chance and that was the method for mine. HMF list a few sources and FreedomGardens sometimes carries it or will cusomstom propagate.

Ok I love them all but I think Ghislaine de Feligonde IS what I want to use if I can find it. I love the yellow blooms and the variation in color. Thank you very much everyone for helping me out. Thank you very much Vapor for doing so much works and investigation on my behalf. I am going to start looking to see if anyone sells this rose

Did your MAC ever bloom or rebloom? Just wondering what that rose needs. Mine was stellar in a pot, but has not bloomed well in the grouond.p Check with HCR and Burling for GdeF. Hope you can find her. When I got her, I hadnet seen many pics and she was theBIG surprise, growing and blooming in a spot that had claimed at least 6 roses due to shade. She grows up 14ft and mingles with NewDawn that grow above.

Vapor I have two MACs and one of them is in partial shade so I’ll give that one a pass. The second gets at least 6 hours and looks green and full but has a very weak spring bloom and even weaker rare blooms the rest of the year. It has never looked full of blooms even in the spring. Maybe I need to give her 5 or 6 years but I don’t have that kind of patience, Specially when I know I could place Mel’s heritage in that place and have a giant gorgeous rose blooming all season long. I have already wasted 3 years on this one and I think I am done. giselle de feligonde rose is sold out every where I can find it except I need to ask Burling.

    last modified: 3 years ago

ok Burling does not carry GdF and everyone else as expected is sold out for the season. I could wait until next year but I do hate waiting since I love to plant in the fall here. I am going to check with Paul if by any chance he has a Mel's heritage he can sell me and use GdF on another project. Mel's heritage really has everything I am looking for and ADD glorious fresh scent like apples to that. Why have 4 when I can have 5 right ? =)

It looks like Rose Petals Nursery has Tausandschon in stock. She's flexible and has a great spring bloom with scattered blossoms later on. I ordered other roses from this vendor for the first time and the roses came looking very healthy and are putting on a ton of growth.

Have you considered Renae? It's completely thornless, and the canes are very soft (at least in the first three years) and super easy to train, fragrant, shade tolerant, very BS resistant, abundant side branches, will repeat all season long. I think it should be beautiful to tie on your narrow trellis. My three-year-old Renae is now 9' tall. I'm not sure how high/wide it will end up, but it's definitely very vigorous and eager to grow.

'Renae' is a great rose - for the right climate. It dies back a lot in my garden (and I'm in 8B) when we get a decent freeze (down to the low 20s). Its definitely a mild climate rose.

Feiy Renae on my must have roses to try also because Lilyfinch really likes it. I did not know it was a bit sensitive to the cold like that. We are 7b but must be at the edge because we get consistently to single digits every year and it isn’t rare to get to zero. I have decided Mel’s heritage is the man for the job here tho and I will find GdF a good spot where thornless would be appreciated. I just noticed my Mel’s heritage is reblooming beautifully and we have been at 98 degrees with a heat index of 115. It started blooming in April and has not been without a bloom since.

Thank you Barbara. I was not familia with that rose. I think I prefer GdF or Mel’s heritage for this project but I will add this one to my list to try at another location.

TausandschonTausandschonIs a favourite I've yet to acquire, as is Renae. I recall Lily finch also experienced die back when in TN. Do you grow Purple Skyliner?

Vapor I ended up keeping MAC since I wanted something huge to see what it would do. It has not grown well for me

It had a lot of bad canes and ended up getting a rough trim this week

Do not give up with MAC. The 1 I planted on the chimney that was doing terribly has exploded and growth and blooms this year. It has been nonstop blooming so I was shockedIt hadGoodGrowth prior, Few blooms. This year it's blooms non stop! It hard to keep it tied in though. Good thing she's thornless!
