More lovely clump shots today. Miss Demeanor caught my eye today, my favorite today. I find myself attracted to this shape, my new favorite. I hope Northwind Dancer is better behaved for you in the future, you know mine is gone……I really liked the bloom.

I like the purple seedling….being a late bloomer is a plus and I like having some of the simpler blooms here to add contrast to the garden.

Lots of nice clumps here. Sun Temple Spirit is so pretty as is Serrated Sentinel-what a clump!! Purple Passion’s Promise did not send up one scape this year. Linda Gluck is also a no show so I like seeing yours! And a fantastic clump of Sweet Child of Mine.

Summer Snowball, Sun Temple Spirit and Purple Passion's Promise are my top 3, but I must say since trialing the Lime/lemon Rudy's Sister here for a couple of years now, I've gained appreciation for that color. Didn't think I would like it at first, but obviously I've been moved to like it as I think the color on Lime Peel is an eye catcher............Maryl

Sun Temple Spirit is a lovely shade of yellow. Linda Gluck is a delicate beauty. I also like Melee and Serrated Sentinel.

Sherry - Miss Demeanor is shorter this year and the deer ate a third of the buds, but the blooms are nice in color and shape. The very dry weather and then the 70-mile-per-hour winds with storms knocked many UF scapes all the way to the ground, so I'm glad NWD's scapes are just leaning some. I do remember when yours moved on last year. Any late blooming seedling is welcome in my garden, especially one with such nice colors.

Kate - It's only the third year for Serrated Sentinel. It clumped up really fast. I'm sorry to read your Purple Passion's Promise didn't scape at all. I had some like that - Laughing Skies and Faberge Easter come to mind. As for the foliage looking good. Some of the ones shown I did water, and others like Freedom of Expression only got watered a couple of times, since they are so far from the hoses.

Maryl - I like the lemon lime colors on daylilies. Your Rudy's Sister is so pretty!

Nan - The yellow on Sun Temple Spirit is like no other yellow I grow. Neighbors walking by always comment on it and ask what its name is.

I too have had lots of problems with PPP. It is a Jerry Hyatt kid, and JH can have off seasons (such as this one).

I will check out my S Temple Spirit when it blooms. I hadn't notice the uniqueness of the color. As for clumps, yes, the goal of every cultivar should be to produce a clump. If it never increases, or does so at a pitiful pace, then to me it is seriously flawed (e.g., Stenciled I here). I don't know why more hybridizers don't include clump shots in their features of intros.

Mantis - Here Sun Temple Spirit is more of a greenish yellow. I'm not sure it looks like that in the north. Take a look at the NGA database photos. Celeste's looks like a golden yellow. There's only one other that looks the color of mine, and it's also growing in the South where it would have temps in the mid 90s this time of year.

As for hybridizers introducing daylilies that increase slowly, I don't think they do - unless they are newbies. Stenciled Infusion, for example, grows like a weed here. I've sold it three times, and still have 12 fans of it. I'm sure it increased rapitdly for Pierce. It must not be happy in your climate, or in the spot you have it planted. Hybridizers don't introduce something unless it has clumped up for them. It would have to, or they wouldn't have enough of it to sell. I remember Lee Pickles when he was working on reds, showing one on his blog that was absolutely magnificent. But he said it would never be introduced because of how slowly it multiplied.

I do note that some hybridizers, such as Korth, note when an intro is slower multiplying. Yes, of course, it is generally beneficial to introduce something that multiplies readily. Some tender plants here do multiply well, but just don't bloom well. Some croak. Some, such as Stenciled, just don't do much. I've seen the same observation by others from the north in regard to that cultivar. As for picturing intros in clump stage, Karol Emmerich is a model in providing a lot of different pics where one can see the entire plant.

Mantis - I do agree that Karol Emmerich's model of showing multiple photos of a cultivar, including clumps, is a great one. I wish all hybridizers would follow suit. But, even with Karol's clump photos, there are some of hers that have not multiplied well here: Forty Days and Forty Nights, Soli Deo Gloria and Kingdom Without End. I doubt that I will ever see clumps like hers here.

Very true. She does not give full info on multiplication. That info would probably be limited because of climate differentials. To go to the extent of showing numerous spent scapes--that is above and beyond.

Love Purple Passion's Promise and Miss Demeanor! I have quite a few plants this year that did not scape at all, nice healthy plants.

Nancy - Purple Pass. Prom. only scaped on half the fans this year. After having three tremendous years, these past two were lackluster. I was just thinking today that Hoopla had not scaped this year. Most of the ones that didn't scape were evergreens or semi-evergreens with a bent toward the evergreen side. I was surprised a hard dormant like that didn't scape. Maybe it will surprise me and scape a bit later. Several of the ones that only had one or two scapes early are now scaping on the other fans.
