No Four Inch Backsplash

I don't want a 4" backsplash. I am considering making a little mural using paintings (done by me) of food for my backsplash area. I don't want to frame the art. I want to paint it directly onto the wall. I thought I could use a row of narrow tiles as a place to seal against the wall and counter to prevent any spills from seeping behind the counter. Would this work the way I want it to?

    Back paint tempered glass and use that. Or do a 2" splash, paint the wall, and hang the framed ad protected by glass pictures on the wall. Painting directly on the wall in a food prep zone where things will get scrubbed, is not a good idea.
