Shift into midsummer.

I find it is comforting to watch the changes in what is blooming and what colors dominate my garden as the season progresses. Only fleeting signs of early summer blooms remain, and the purple dominated color palette is now giving way to pink and yellow. Not everything recovered well from the spring weather, but there is still plenty looking good at this time. Here are a few nice things:

Sandwiched between High Country Banshee (left) and Sidonie (right), a lovely purple and yellow combination.

I am loving this pink nicotiana really filling out now.

Calendula just beginning, and I have tons of it so there will be many blooms to come.

A perfect Cosmos bloom. They are just starting, and I have tons because they self seed very enthusiastically. They'll go until a frost takes them out.

Rudbeckia, I'm super into this rusty orange color it's got going on.

A cluster on baby Hera's Song (I think). This was my mislabel NOT-Lilian-Gibson but still, it's looking like it's going to be a lovely rose.

Looking towards the entrance to the garden.

Against the scorching south-facing wall, coneflower, yarrow, monarda.

Mini-meadow and John Cabot with a few blooms still. JC has been especially long blooming this year, but the girdlers have taken a toll on it yet again.

Magpie, great to see that such a lot survived the hailstorms I love the purple and yellow and rusty orange in particular, and what a pretty rose the mislabelled one is.

Magpie, what a fun and colorful garden you have created .

Your Rudabeckia is stellar! Did you start that one from seed? You are so successful at seed starting.

@Kristine LeGault 8a pnw Yes I started it from seed last year :) I've got another round of new perennials starting in seed trays right now as well, for fall planting!

Thanks everyone:) it is so amazing to go out there and be surrounded by flowers each day, it feels like a luxury. I'm very grateful for the little slice of land I've got to garden on.

Magpie - :) :) how lovely!!! It looks like a slice of paradise. In your last picture, what are the dark purple/black flowers? They're very striking amongst the more pastel colors. Do you find that your Cosmos (that bloom is entrancing!!) stay upright after a strong rain? I love your nicotiana and your first picture is delightful!!

Carol, I find that the cosmos do need to be staked most of the time here. Once they have a lot of blooms on them they are easily pushed over by our sprinklers hitting them sideways. Mine get about 6' tall by the end of summer but there are varieties that are much shorter that probably wouldn't flop over. I love them but the flopping over does get annoying so now I only let them grow in places where tying them to something is easy. The black flowers are bachelor buttons.

A few blooms of Sidonie and Jude.

Magpie - maybe I won't get Cosmos...things in my garden get pummeled by hail at least every week. Thanks. :) Oh, Bachelor Buttons. I have blue ones. :) Oooooh...what beauty!!! I love both roses....maybe I love Sidonie a bit more...not sure. Which fragrance delights you the most of these 2?

I would try them. They have very feathery, airy leaves and stems so they're less likely to get damaged by hail than a plant with wider leaves, plus they are constantly opening new blooms once they start (not in flushes but continuously). You won't know till you try, plus the seed is cheap and they self sow easily. Plenty of shorter varieties to be found.

I would say that I prefer Jude's wonderful fragrance, but in part that's because I don't have anything else that smells like Jude, while Sidonie has a very classic rose fragrance and I have several roses that smell like that. As a whole plant in my garden though, Sidonie is the better rose.

@rosecanadian It's opened up a bit more (as they tend to do lol, I always get excited when I cut a new bouquet and I take a photo right away even though I know it will look better in a day or two). I do love Sidonie, it's one of my favorites. It was also a favorite of the squirrels this year sadly. So romantic looking.

Magpie - thanks. :) :) I put Dwarf Cosmos on my list. :) :) I'll try to find some seed later. :) So Jude has a wonderful, unique fragrance, but Sidonie's classic rose fragrance + is great as a garden rose. :) Thanks. In your last picture...does it have Sea Holly? Beautiful Sidonie in that bouquet!!

@librarian_gardner_8b_pnw thank you! I was pruning back my oregano (all the clusters of tiny white blooms) and I am finding that they are a great filler flower that lasts well in the vase.

I love using Oregano for that, too 😍 I have both purple and white blooming varieties. I really like the mix of everything you have in your bouquet. And in your gardens, too.
