How well does SONG OF THE SEA perform for you? It looks like it is winter hardy, even though I think it is registered as an evergreen.

I see that it is an evergreen. It is not by nature either tall or a large flower, though flower size is certainly adequate. Can't say much more at this point. The color is not a really clear color. Better rendition of color:

I love Sandhill Shine. I dont know much about older hybridizers, whats the story?

Floyd Boatwright suffered a stroke last year.

David, shorter, yes, but actually taller than many of Karol's are growing right now. Mid-20s. After viewing two dozen pics, you have no other observations?

The first two, Guardians of the Heart and Song of the Sea, are attention getters. However those dark grape colors in my heat can often look like rotted plums by midday. The Emmerich , Ruler of Nations, would probably do about the same if my past experience with some of hers is anything to go by. In your cooler climate they are all lovely though....I was looking at Velvet Hammer just the other day since my first Korth is so pleasing to me, and it looks even more promising in your clump shot. Any further comments about it?.........Maryl

SANDHILL SHINE caught my eye. I love a good bitone/bicolor. It is a shame that Mr. Boatwright suffered a stroke. It looks like it is probably in the low teens for bud count.

BLESSED ART THOU: I don't know if it the lighting or not in your photo, but I don't see much lavender/orchid in the petals. I posted a picture of it in my post today and that is how it looks throughout the day.

RULER OF NATIONS is on my need to acquire list along with PRAY WITHOUT CEASING.

I could not find GUARDIANS OF YOU HEART in the database, but I did find GUARD YOUR HEART. Then I went to NGA and there are some photos that look like yours. The registration photo has little resemblance to the plant that you are growing but the description matches.

It is an attractive plant.

LOVE IN A VACUUM and T BONE WALKER have some resemblance to PARADISE BAR AND GRILL. Must have been a period of time when Curt was working with those colors and watermarks.

VERTICAL HORIZON is looking very good. I need to hybridize with it. Mine is in the second to last row in my back garden and is typically the last area that I see. By the time I get there, I've crossed way too many. Maybe I should start back there.

Yes, Guard Your Heart; thanks for catching that. My pic looks pretty much like that of Sscape, except that S's is a low-light photo, soft and grainy, with a resulting lavender effect. (Why 10 shots of basically the same pic?) Karol's camera, as Debra has observed, tends to redden.

Velvet Hammer is very nice, but a more cerise red. Some early blooms can be splotchy. Kay, Doctor McGregor's Garden has such a nice pinkish tinge to the watermark. It's a cultivar that Davisson enthusiasts have generally passed up. Don't know why.

No conclusions about Ruler or Pray w Ceasing. Takes a couple of years to really evaluate.

The greenish yellow throat is very dominant on Blessed Art Thou here. Certainly, on different days, one sees more of the base color, such as this:

But the throat was gleaming, in full sun, so I took the shot just to illustrate the iridescence of its throat. I am sure that someone with filters or such would capture it better. A lovely daylily, but people quickly pass up anything pastel.

So many stunning photos in this post! Velvet Hammer grabs me just as much as the last time you posted it. I looked it up and saw the bloom is only 5 inches. Too bad. I now only add new plants where the blooms are 6 inches or, preferably, larger. I also noticed the registered bud count is only 14. Does it clump up fast?

My top favorites on this post are Victoria Josephine and Sandhill Shine, both of which are now nearly impossible to acquire. How did you snag Victoria Josephine? I've contacted Steve Todd year after year, and he never has any available. Sandhill Shine reminds me of Deeds Not Words. I see they share a couple of the same parents.

Substantial Treasure has the same look as Daniel Howard Norris, only in a different color. How does that one perform for you? It's too bad I don't hybridize with round dips because I'm really drawn to those two Norrises. I'm trying to transition from being a collector to being a more focused hybridizer, so I try to resist any new acquisitions unless they fall into my hybridizing goals.

The Emmerichs- - Song of the Sea, Ruler of Nations and Character Witness - all have lovely colors. None of my Emmerichs performed well this year. I would say the best performing ones were older - Entwined in the Vine and Born to Reign.

Doctor McGregor's Garden has pretty colors. I wonder if its not as popular because it's not a UF. Do you think the one that rhymed with "beepers" is what held up your last post?

I also love the clumps of Tahitian Waterfall and Vertical Horizon. Thanks for the beautiful post!

Velvet Hammer seems larger than 5 inches. Prolific and vigorous. Blooms are well positioned.

I didn't want to take a chance on another lost post, so yes, like $exy, didn't want to risk *eepers, which has several off-color slang uses.

Substantial Treasure is sterile--a huge flower.

Free the Captives is blooming now (Emmerich)--a reliable, taller cultivar that is also vigorous and intensely colored.

Sandhill Shine is dormant. I think that Nan has it also. I would like to have tried some of Floyd's SE's, but life is short. Last year, before his stroke, Floyd told me that my Sandhill was the last he had.

Judy told me she had a huge amount of VJ last year, and I'm sure she was glad to sell a lot of them.

Inevitably, hybridizers transition away from new cultivars to use of their existing lines.

Mantis - I see Judy sold several fans of VJ last year on the Lily Auction. You were lucky to get that one. How long have you had Velvet Hammer?

Doctor McGregor's Garden is a great color and form. I always enjoy seeing it! I also really love Tahitian Waterfall and Guard your heart. Love in a vacuum is a good dark red.

Beautiful selection for the post. I pretty much like every single one. Guard your heart is so pretty it looks like it has rings of color, I love purples with watermarks, can't choose between Song of the Sea and Ruler of Nations. Great clump of Velvet Hammers and so is Tahitian Waterfall, mine is so sick this year but I got a couple normal looking blooms. Victoria Josephine is really beautiful. And Sandhill Shine is a striking bicolor. Not many things tempt me anymore but something like this does! Probably because I only have one bicolor ))

Agree there are a lot of striking ones on this post. Tahitian Waterfall makes a nice clump as does Velvet Hammer. I really like Substantial Treasure but I tend to like the wide flat ones. So many here to catch an eye-glad you persevered to post!
