Floral, I‘m confused by that, but maybe it’s just punctuation tripping me up. Are you saying it‘s either an Ash (Fraxinus) or Beech (Fagus)?

Apologies. I wrote the wrong F. species. Fraxinus, of course. No way it's a Beech.

I'd agree w/dave & sam -- boxelder has green first-year stems.

Good thinking. I didn't think of that. I don't get to see A negundo as a sapling, only as a planted tree.

Both Fraxinus americana and Acer negundo are in the area.

The veins just look different to me but I am comparing a tree probably from the 1950s to the fresh new growth of a seedling.

Oh, and good eye Dave. I do believe it to be Smilex rotundifolia. Mostly I try to kill it and the honeysuckle back over the property line. The thorns and rapid growth I dislike. Does it have any positive qualities?
