Here are some ideas:

1. Adding end tables with lamps, or even floor lamps that flank your sofa will help with ambiance. Lamp light is much nicer than overhead lighting and having a place to set a drink is also nice.

2. Move your sofa up so at least the front legs are sitting on the rug. You could add a console table behind your sofa and put some plants on it or decorate with books, or something meaningful to you.

3. Adding a coffee table or ottoman in front of the sofa would also add some interest. It does not have to match your furniture. It could be wood, or metal or glass.

4. If you have the budget for curtains that is an opportunity to add some visual interest as well.

5. You don't need to add a gallery. You can keep the art at "human height" and just do a large piece of art behind your couch. You could hang your other piece (on the floor) over the desk or in another area where it fits better.

I support the idea of side tables on both sides of the sofa (different). Near the door is a minimalist floor lamp. Pillow on the sofa accent. Replace the curtain with a more interesting one. Now I have a night, later I will draw more specifically ..
In front of the sofa, by the way, there may be an ottoman for legs.

A huge piece of morden art and no desk there . 2 end tables some great lamps and for sure a different rug that one is boring . Is that hot water heating or electric ? If hot water do some drapes ideally either the wall color or a color from the new art and rug.Tha rug in no way works with the furniture I think a really cool floor lamp by the door but get the art and the rug first.

I would turn the rug 90 degrees, tuck it under the cabinet in the right lower corner of this photo (assume a TV is over that?), and pull the sofa forward until the rug looks centered. That will leave some space for a long table on the long wall that will (1) hopefully fit into the corner by the door, (2) make a more generously sized desk, and (3) serve as a console table behind the sofa. I have used simple slab doors for this (looks like you would need two), supported by 2-drawer file cabinets (does anyone use file cabinets anymore??) or screwed-on legs or sturdy angle brackets attached to the wall (if you're allowed to do that). You can buy plain doors new for about $60 for 24x80 at HD or Lowe's (available in various widths to fit your corner) or check your local ReStore (although those would generally have doorknob holes, unless they're bifold closet doors, which are often too narrow for a good table). More curtain panels so they look full, a couple of lamps, another poster, and you could call it done for now. (Someday maybe add a coffee table and another living room chair?)

I really like to have the desk by the window becuase I spend about 8 hours working there. I open my window and get some distraction and fresh air from outside.

Have you thought about putting the desk right in the center between the windows?

It looks like your very old fashioned windows have hardware for box valences on top. If so, it might look nice to restore them and drop down single drape panels on rings on a rod so that you can push each panel entirely to just one side of each window.

Can you flip the room so that the TV is on the other wall? If not, I would suggest briniging the floor lamp to the left end of the sofa and bringing the chair to that end of the room as well, to centrally face the window (and where I suggest your desk could go).

Now that I see the whole room I realize a wall mural won't work. Do a google search for "board and batten accent wall" and see if anything jumps out at you.

We might suggest trying a plant or two in the void area near the door. Otherwise it looks like you could use some artwork, side tables, floor lamps, and maybe some more chairs. Take a second to look through some of the images below. It might help you with chosing accessories for your space.
