I use solar shades to control heat and damaging UV they are inexpensive and I would do a custom one for the top window and rollers for the bottom. I your home I would do the charcoal 10% the darker the color the better the view .

Would you leave the top windows uncovered or must they be covered?

I wouldn't cover the top windows unless leaving them uncovered creates intolerable heat in the room.

The rest of the style in the room is so determined b&w geometric "global," I would go with mudcloth or shibori shades on the lowers. But roller shades in bamboo or a natural fiber weave would be fine if you want to relax the look and warm it up.

I would buy 2 more rugs like the one you've got or buy the same rug in triple the size to bring out the rug left and right to center of the windows. Now it feels cramped.

I was thinking to leave top windows and add “natural” rolled shades in bamboo/reed to warm it up as well. Yes, the placement of the rug looks awkward in the photo. I’ll address that. Get an exterior shade from costco. You can get not only a solar panel to charge the battery like in the picture but you can get a wifi device to schedule the shade to close automatically.
