have you checked out Matteo lighting? They make some nice contemporary pendant lights. Here are a couple I found on their site in black

I prefer cylindrical lamps over spheres for that space since there are so many rectangles. A rectangular footprint might be nice to get better coverage over the table. I have a round footprint which works too depending on proportions. My table is a 3x5 rectangle. If yours is longer than 3:5 proportions, an elongated rectangle might be better than round.

I liked the first pic S M posted in terms of shape. If you keep looking, knowing the shapes and finishes you prefer, you’ll find the right one. Look at lighting sites - there are tons of them. There used to be one called euro lighting or something like that, which had some very specific modern lights that other sites didn’t have. But now I think those styles are more common. Look at 3-5 different lighting sites at least to get an idea of all the kinds of designs that are available.

All sorts of possibilities for having fun, while I think if you want a strict modern look you need to focus on the somewhat smaller than expected chairs.

Don't use a rug. (I wouldn't put a rug under a dining table in any circumstance.) Stay away from globes and round entirely. Go with the squares and lines on your walls.

I can't find a picture of one now but what could be very attractive is a hanging row of narrow cylinder pendants, just simple tubes really, in black or silvery finish, that send pools of light downward. It would help make the space feel intimate but minimalist, if that's what you want. But then you would need to light the walls if you put art there. If you want to have fun, you need something pop and witty.
