Pruning Junipers

Hi all. About 10 years ago we planted what I think was called a dwarf chinese juniper. It has beautiful yellow tips in the spring. As you can see below they aren't so much "dwarf" any more. I've had junipers when I was a kid any my recollection is that you can hack them back and they come back.

The problem is that I don't like the dead "chopped off" look along the driveway and there's no telling how much lawn I'm going to lose. They seem to just keep getting wider. Can I cut them way back like 50% this fall or will they likely not grow back nicely? I'm OK with a year or two of "not so nice looking" as long as they do recover.

Any recommendations are much appreciated.
