Do you think I would have to sand it first?

Yes, I think it can be painted. I would not sand it because I hate sanding. I would try a small section with just paint and see if it sticks. If not then I would try primer first. The key is selecting the right primer. There is one that people use on Ikea furniture that would likely work. I will see if I can find the name
