Thanks!

Wow. Here's a pic of less impressive cones of an eastern white pine in a nearby state park, but it sure is alot of 'em.

Yes, white pine (Pinus strobus), are the longest cones of any of our native pines.

I had a couple female cones for the first time on my young specimen this season.

When I said native, I meant native for my area in the upper Midwest. :-)

Gotcha - just gave me an excuse to post some pics from travels out to Eddy Arboretum.

I have had the recent pleasure to have vacationed through those robust landscapes over the past couple weeks, seeing the UP and a bit of the MN/WI/IA/IL corridor of the Mississippi River.

Did you hit up any public gardens/arboretums during your Midwest travels?

VV, didn't David Douglas, the famous horticulturalist, yearning to get some sugar pine cones in his hands, use a rifle to shoot at them way up high and obtaining some that way? Or is that just a myth?

Not sure what kind of pine, but as a young boy I visited Arrowhead Lake in southern CA and I found the most massive pine cone ever. Looks like a ponderosa cone, but as big as your head. I still have it

Could be coulter pine. Got a picture?

Compare to specimens here...

I brought a Coulter pine cone back east from Californy, and it set on a mantle for 10+ yrs in VA. I finally moved here, and out of curiosity, found 2 huge seeds still in the cone. Planted them in fall, and one came up the next spring! It survived the next winter for a while, and then got chewed off by a dang deer.

Pinus lambertiana (sugar pine) and Pinus coulteri (coulter pine), although different in form from each other are both said to weigh up to 12 lbs.

That would make those woods a Hardhat area imo.

Nice cone displays VV.

Oh yeah, it’s got to be a Coulter pine.
