That wall is not sad at all. I would add some colorful art, a couple of small table with lamps, and perhaps a larger rug.

Love the pillow on the ottoman and all the artwork over the couch. Does it make sense to pull the white chair in a bit closer? Then a table, table lamp, and I’m sure that you’ll find something to hang on the wall. The floor lamp is ok but a table lamp would be cozier.

It's not sad...just that your other walls are all so busy and full. You really have a LOT going on in that room so that one spot feels naked and neglected. I like the suggestions above. It's not really bad, so don't feel like you have to go find something immediately. Find something that you like.

Or find something that I like, such as a much more interesting (and bulky) floor lamp!

When I say you have a lot going on in there and that it's busy, I don't mean it in a bad way. I actually love this and think you've done a great job in there. It's put together so well that I'm sure you'll get your nekkid spot addressed adequately. :)

What you have on the right side of the photo looks like a well thought-out intentional arrangement. On the left side it looks a little more haphazard. To me the shelf full of stuff isn't really doing anything. Nor is the box in front of the fireplace. I would use the left side of the room as a way to rest of the eyes from all of the interest on the right. I would find one large painting with a very simple subject matter and color scheme to put above the mantle. Replace the multi-canister floor lamp with another floor lamp that is more simple and streamlined (If you need one at all). Remove as much clutter as possible around the piano. I would take out whatever is on the other side of the piano and maybe replace with a tall tree like plant. These suggestions are all based on looking at the wall from an angle. You might post a picture of it head on, which could completely change what people suggest. Cool rug btw.

I would try removing ALL the curtains…they distract , more than add to the ambiance of the room…then remove the big red and white rug…put the ottoman in front of the couch.. the round table at either end of the couch

move the long shelf to serve as a mantle for the fireplace… you can add another side chair to that side of the fireplace if desired….then install the piano in the center of the window .. with a partial sunshade behind it to conceal it from view from outdoors…at this time…some of the art could be transferred to the fireplace wall to create more interesting … less cluttered..art walls on each side of the room… at this time you can decide if replacing the rug will add to the new ambiance of the room

The checkered rug on the floor is the problem. The heavy curtains are too heavy also. Move a picture over the fireplace. Less is more. Try to thin out some of the things that you have.

You can't go halfway here. You're all in or you're not doing it, and you are DOING it. So...I say more is more in this case.

Can you add another shelf? (Photoshop this before making holes. And to find the correct spot. And maybe don't. But the only problem I see with the shelves is that you need more to fill it out evenly. Also earthquakes. 😁)

If we're going to criticize the curtains, I would say I'd prefer a little color on the sheers. They're too white. But it could just be the lighting. Overall, I think the window treatment is a good way to deal with a rather challenging bay.

Here’s the thing -
The floors are grey and the walls are this purple/grey. The photo was shot when we have our nice hour of direct light in northern Canada and then it hides behind the bay… so the room looks quite dark grey and gloomy - hence the light coloured curtains. When it snows (which is like 3/4 of the year) or super Smokey out (all summer it seems) it gets very depressing. When it is dark and grey outside and then dark and grey inside it is miserable.

I do agree that the shelves have to move…

I like the idea of bookshelves- especially the built in style ones but I’m not sure how exactly to pull it off with the piano there. I could maybe paint the wall a contrasting colour and put a large piece of art above it. With feature walls tho it’s one big wall that leads in to my very oak kitchen lol.

Now I like my orange checkered rug I’m just wondering if I shouldn’t get a larger one now that we’ve changed the layout to be more open and encompass the chair. I really like the Ruggable Iris Apfel collection

My priorities are

1. Fun colourful space
2. Enough Seating for 6+ people
3. Find a way to cope with the grey I hate so deeply and the honey oak.
   
   

It's a great looking room! I think one problem in that area is the lamp. It's not particularly attractive and seems out of scale with the chair. I would add a small table and find a great lamp. Maybe a foot stool. Add some art on the wall right there,

eta: you mentioned a rug and when I was searching for pics of lamps with chairs similar to yours, I saw a pic with a hide, or flokati rug under a chair, adjacent to another area rug, such as you have. It looked great but I didn't save it and now i can't find it.

Ok update for everyone. We’re moving the rocking chair to my office/study. I’ll post a picture of the couch we’re getting tomorrow. I tried new curtains and I hate them. We’re gonna take the shelves down when we repaint the walls a warmer white.

The rug I got came in today and they sent me the wrong colour. I don’t think I hate it tho? Should I get a refund or replace it with the right colour?

That pattern does make a big statement…love that it covers so much of the floor area…you may need a whole new set of accessories to go with the rug.. but it does add a lot of personality and life …to the room

We got the new couch today and put it on the other wall. The sad wall is still sad lol but we’re taking the shelves down when we paint next month to re evaluate what we want to do. The rug was from bed bath and beyond they actually sent us the blue not the green!
