Pregnancy cravings - just for fun

No, at 63 I am not pregnant but was just reading an article about pregnancy cravings and how weird they can be. I was pregnant just once, with twins, at 35 (thank you IVF) I suffered little from nausea, other than when brushing myy teeth and one time I cooked a turkey dinner and had to sit outside on the deck while the rest of the family enjoyed it. My main cravings were Welch's grape juice and commercial chocolate milk. I was supposed to drink something like 1 litre of milk per day and had never been a milk drinker but the commercial chocolate milk was more like a dessert treat. One of the things I read was dill pickles dipped in Nutella - talk about gagging! Anyway, what did you or your significant other crave?

During high school, I worked in a steak restaurant that served a really cold, salty, tangy Caesar salad. When I was pregnant over 10 years later I CRAVED that salad. So weird.

Ice Tea. I had dreams of swimming in a pool full of it. I would happily gulp away while swimming around.

I didn’t crave hot dogs but did have a dream I gave birth to 3 of them. The nurse brought them to me in the hospital lined up in a blanket.🥴

I craved mini tootsie rolls and hot dogs and baked beans. Doctor up a can of baked beans with ketchup and brown sugar then heat them up. Brown the hot dogs in a skillet so they were very toasty (like when done on a grill) cut them into bite sized pieces and mix them into baked beans. And I still freaking like it lol

The night before my scheduled c-section, due to the first baby being transverse, my husband and I went to a steakhouse for dinner. I ordered prime rib and a glass of red wine, first drink I had had in about 16 months. I made sure to tuck my huge belly under the table when ordering. I figured at that point a glass of wine wouldn't make a difference in my soon to be born offspring's intelligence.

No cravings either time but I could not look at food in the morning and the smell of eggs made me ill at any time. That was a looong time ago.

With our daughter, I craved watermelon and cantelope. But, through my entire 7 months (before I went eclamptic and had an emergency C-section) I couldn’t stand to eat or smell any chocolate, beef, peas or popcorn. So weird! It took almost a year before I could eat beef again, although I craved chocolate with a passion starting the day after she was born!

Not a craving, but food related. With my first, I couldnt chew food. Chewing made me ill, lasted through most of my pregnancy. Most of my pregnancy was a protein shake for lunch and tomato soup for dinner. I only gained 12 pounds, and had an 8 pound baby. I came home from the hospital weighing less than my pre-pregnancy weight.

With my second I craved tofu.

Chili dogs! With the works, mustard , relish, onions & shredded cheese.

No cravings...but couldn't drink coffee (I love coffee and always have) for the first 2 1/2 months. After then, it was back to normal, but I cut down on the amount that I had

every day. I didn't gain any extra weight either...but I was very active, so not sure

what the reason was because I ate normally. My Mom said she never gained much weight either, but my sister gained way too much with her pregnancies . LOL

Another tootsie roll lover here. Our firstborn has the loveliest big chocolate brown eyes.

I craved watermelon, tomatoes and salsa, Chinese food and random vegetables. I absolutely hated chocolate, cheese, bacon, coffee, and what ever microwave meal my husband would heat up. I'm not sure what the spice was, but I had to open the door and let fresh air in. I craved fudgesicles near the end of my first pregnancy. I was going through a box a day.

I don't remember what I liked, but I will tell you, both my mom and my sister knew they were pregnant after brushing their teeth. I didn't have the same gene, but you're not alone!

It doesn't make for a good story and sounds a bit like gloating, but I don't remember having any particular cravings when I was pregnant. I also blessedly didn't get hit with nausea during pregnancy, except for one occasion when spinach set me off. It was a very uneventful pregnancy.

Strawberry ice cream sodas. Soda water, strawberry syrup, vanilla ice cream. Makes me old. Used to be able to get one anywhere, even Denny's. Now nobody knows what one is or they think it's creamy like a smoothie or shake. Blah!

a huge bowl of vanilla ice cream smothered in raspberries. i'd be embarrassed to tell you how much weight i gained during my pregnancy!!

The only craving I had during both pregnancies was Alph-bits. yep, the cereal. I don;t remember how many boxes I went through but it was a lot. I couldn't stomach pasta during the first pregnancy and any type of fish for the second one. The smell of fish would make me nauseous. It was years before I could eat either of them again.

Shrimp - preferably breaded and fried. Liking shrimp wasn't new, but craving it was! I think it was the steakhouse chain, Sizzler, that was running some kind of shrimp promotion when my craving was at its peak - I'd get off work and head there for a big shrimp dinner.

I did have a little morning sickness but I don't remember that it was a big problem - I do remember the profound fatigue, which was my first indication that I was expecting - but maybe it was, because I do remember my OB telling me that once I hit the 2nd trimester I would feel a lot better. I did become faint at work a couple of times.

I don't remember any cravings or aversions, but I did use being pregnant as permission to buy out of season fruit and pay the premium for it. I saved all my drama points for pre-term labor (was stopped and I was nearly induced) and then complications after delivery.

No cravings for me. I was so very sick. Mostly I just tried to figure out if there was anything I could actually eat. At one point in my first pregnancy, I hit upon Chick fil A chicken biscuits - which was funny because I had been a pescatarian for years. I couldnt even look at salad. DH had to make and eat them by himself. I ate a chicken biscuit every day except Sundays for a while!

My second pregnancy was worse. I was hospitalized for hyperemisis. I have no idea what I ate!

With my first, at 40 (no IVF but three years of trying) I HAD to have a whole grapefruit every single day, carefully sectioned in a bowl with a little brown sugar. I was never a big grapefruit eater prior to that. I could not eat chicken, it made me sick just to look at it.
With my second, at 45 (unplanned but so very welcome!) I was hospitalized for ten weeks for preterm labor (and then then more weeks at home). I was stuck with the repetitive hospital menu most of the time, and I can still remember that on Tuesdays there was chocolate cake and Thursdays was enchiladas! I actually wept bitterly one Tuesday when I was served a brownie instead of the longed-for cake, lol. DD was born healthy at 35 weeks:)

Nekotish, that is so funny abou grape juice craving. Mine was OJ. I gained a whole 35 pounds which is considered normal, but I was young too, and my doctor told me to lay off the OJ.

That was the only craving I had but when I had my last checkup on a Friday I was already 3cm dilated so I expected to go into labor any second. Saturday night DH took me out for a banana split which I never eat and I went into labor the next morning. :)

No craving with any of the three, except being so, so, so tired in the first trimester. I have never felt so tired before or since, and it was always early on. I told DH i was very busy making metatarsals and could not be disturbed.

Nauseated only once, unfortunately aboard a banking client's corporate jet, among a group of men. I wasn't showing yet so maybe they just thought it was my first time flying? LOL.

I didn't gain any weight to speak of, and lost a few with my third. So I can't blame them. I was overweight before, during and after kids.

@mtnrdredux_gw I also had the incredible fatigue in the first trimester. I would come home from work, eat and go to bed ad infinitum until I hit that magical 2nd trimester when I felt wonderful and had boundless energy.

I had morning sickness for most of the first trimester and all I could keep down was plain chicken sandwiches on white bread and chocolate milk.

When I got over that, whenever DH took me for the antenatal checkups it would be about lunchtime when we were finished. He would ask, "What would you like to do now?" and I'd reply, "Let's go to the food court for a curry." I had never cared for curry until then- I liked spicy food but not the flavour of curry- but suddenly I couldn't get enough. (I still like it :-) ). I also craved Cheezels, a snack food not unlike Cheetos. It's a wonder DD wasn't born bright orange.

I could not stand the smell of margarine. It just smelled rancid to me.

A friend's mother apparently craved oranges, though normally she was allergic to them. She could eat them while she was pregnant, but after she delivered, she was allergic again.

I was a vegetarian for 10 years and when I became pregnant I craved nothing but red meat - so that was the end of that! I still love rare red meat, as does my son. I did not find out his gender, but somehow I knew it was a boy and his nursery was decorated in all navy and white. I’m petite and gained 22 lbs. and only showed in my third trimester. I exercised until the day I went into labor so the weight was easy to lose in a few weeks. No real morning sickness, but awful insomnia!

Mtn, although I had a miscarriage late in my first trimester, I worked for the School of Business, in the Accounting department. The director of accounting's office was right behind mine. My fatigue was unbearable. Before he closed his door to go to lunch I asked if I could take a nap on his floor. He laughed and said sleep well. Best.job.ever.

I never had cravings with either one and no nausea either. I gained 20 pounds with the first one who weighed nine pounds and when I left the hospital I weighed a pound less than before pregnant. I was so cocky...wore home a straight skirt which fit perfectly. With the second I gained over 30 pounds and she weighed 7 /11 and I had to diet for a year to lose the weight.

Like Caroline I craved meat! And fresh fruit when morning sickness was an issue ( just a bit and rarely). I was a bit too thin (at 23) when I conceived and I think I needed the protein. I gained 25 pounds during pregnancy and it took a while — maybe a year to lose the 15 pounds I wanted to lose. Now (af 68) I am only 7 lbs. less than my final pregnancy weigh-in, but at 19.6 BMI I’m at a healthy weight.

I am a huge carnivore and my first pregnancy had me repulsed by the smell of meat. It was ironic to me, because a good friend of mine got pregnant right before me and she was a new vegetarian. I told her i thought surely she would crave meat while pregnant. She disn't and shortly thereafter, I abstained from meat for six months or more.

I craved tiramisu, and lemon tarts. Weight gain was not an issue with that pregnancy, thankfully. One of my other pregnancies had me finish with a few too many pounds on.

I am another who could not brush my teeth without gagging. I made now-XH leave the bathroom when I brushed my teeth. For some reason, it was much worse with an audience. I’m so surprised to discover that I’m not alone! Other than that, I had a totally uneventful pregnancy. Delivery was an emergency C-section. DD had a knot in her cord. The OB said it was because she was very active as a fetus. She hasn’t slowed down yet!

I don’t recall any cravings or anything that repulsed me either. I gained 24 lbs, which my OB thought was perfect. I’m still trying to get rid of those 24 pounds and a few of their friends who have come to stay.

When I was pregnant with my first, there was heightened awareness of gestational diabetes. I was a normal weight going into the pregnancy, and was SO disappointed to learn that I only needed an extra 400-500/day to support a growing fetus. I was so disgruntled. That was it??? I recall eating a pitiful granola bar each afternoon (in addition to my regular diet) and thinking, "Well, that's all." I could eat slightly more while breastfeeding.

I had a friend who couldn't stomach the prenatal vitamins that were popular then, so I recommended she eat a bowl of Total cereal each day to compensate. I also did that, as well.

The only food that repulsed me was anything grilled, and especially in a restaurant. I recall being nearly sick at the table when a grilled chicken sandwich was delivered. The grill marks tasted like poison to me (and still do).

With my first, I couldn't chew food.

I've never had children, but I lived with my sister when she was pregnant for her first son - my oldest nephew. She had bouts where she couldn't swallow... even her own saliva. I remember her sort of spitting / gagging into a napkin trying to get the moisture out of her mouth.

Sloppy Joes. You know that yucky stuff that came out of a can. I have no idea why and I have never eaten since I was pregnant. But man did I crave that stuff. Made exDH go to grocery store and get me some. And he was not the most accommodating person (hence, the 'ex' part) so it was not easy to get him to go.

I was also crazy tired in the first trimester with my first. So much so that when exDH and I were socialzing with my boss and his wife, he mentioned to exDH that maybe I should see a doctor because I've been so tired at work. Ha! Yep, sure I'll see the doctor. We all had a good laugh when I finally announced I was pregnant to my co-workers.

I don't think I was as tired with my 2nd which is weird because I was 14 years older!

The one pregnancy symptom I do recall (besides late pregnancy discomfort and the feeling of the baby kicking my ribs and squishing my bladder) was lightheadedness at the beginning of the 2nd trimester, to the point of having to sit down rather abruptly because otherwise I would have fainted. I understand that it's due to your blood volume not quite keeping up with the needs of pregancy. It was pretty short-lived.

Both pregnancies I had a hard time eating. First pregnancy the nausea only lasted 3 months, during that time the only thing I could tolerate was homemade peanut butter rice crispy bars. Once I felt better, I craved salt water taffy, had to drive 30 miles to buy it. Second pregnancy the nausea lasted 7 long months, the rice crispy bars worked again and I could usually tolerate chicken noodle soup. Once the nausea finally ended, I craved tuna melts. Funny as before my pregnancy I disliked tuna, would never eat it. Still like tuna melts and peanut butter rice crispy bars.

I had very little nausea and no cravings, but I could not drink coffee. That didn't last long after baby was born...

The day I was supposed to be induced the hospital was very busy and every time I called they told me, "not yet, call back next shift." Finally around 6pm I was so disgruntled I told my husband we had to go out for a nice supper. Well I ate the richest, heaviest food you can imagine (think organ meat and duck) and of course DURING supper I got the call to come in at 8pm. Ugh. But actually since I couldn't eat for about 20 hours afterward I was kind of grateful to have put down a good base.
