Impossible Bedroom Layout

After deciding to adopt a rescue dog, seemingly, my double bed was no longer doing the trick as I already have a 110 pound dog who sleeps on my bed, and the new rescue has since developed the same habit. Moral of the story, I impulsively purchased a king sized bed. Which has now taken over my entire room.

I've quickly realized how sad and small my room looks, and am planning to do an overhaul. I would like to get a new bed frame to lower by bed as close to the floor as possible to create the illusion of a larger space, bring my curtains right from ceiling to floor, along with other tips ive gathered from some designers. (if you have tips or advice feel free to share.)

Willing to buy new furnitre, likely going to paint, do an accent wall, etc. But this is besides the point. Where the heck do I put everything? What goes where? How do i navigate a layout for this insane room? I've contemplated throwing my bed in my closet, but questioned if id have space, then questioned tearing my closet out completely. But heck im no professional, i dont know whats in those walls.

Open to getting rid of anything, and buying new.

Whew. anyways. Someone? God? Anyone?

Help me, Please.

Tough one.... the TL;DR is that your room is actually already in the ideal configuration (in terms of where your bed is, TV, etc.). A few thoughts:

    • Long shot - but if there's a bedroom #3, I'm assuming there are bedroom #1 and bedroom #2 hiding somewhere... is there any chance that they may work better for your needs?
    • Re: a new bed frame: other than the height - make sure the footprint that your bed occupies on the floor is minimal - i.e. no wide frame sides, etc. We recently purchased this metal bed frame and we are super happy with it (it's likely not close enough to the floor though). Smaller nightstands will help with saving space as well.
    • Looks like you're keeping a lot of stuff on the TV wall - I'm wondering if you just need a good storage system on that wall that maximizes that and organizes everything? I'd consider a a built-in "entertainment center" with a spot for your TV - we've had one in our previous master bedroom and couldn't be happier (it was 12ft (which I think your room cannot accommodate), but I think you can easily do a 10ft system with the same structure, and without blocking the entrance to the bedroom - perhaps incorporate a couple of shelves for your books, etc.):

    • Another option is to maybe buy a couple of Ikea PAX wardrobes / storage systems (make sure they are not too deep, or you won't have enough space to walk through your room....), and keep your dresser (or buy a new one) for where the TV is.
    • If you like the ideas above for storage and you think that they can potentially replace your built-in closet - you can use the built-in closet as a niche for e.g. a desk / chair / anything else that you may need space for in your room.

    HTH - good luck!

It looks like the bed is in a good position for the room.

The blue wall seems to close in the space rather than open it up. Consider painting the whole space one soothing color.

I'm not sure the drapes need to be higher but I would leave the sheers and add blackout drapes on each side.

The rug is not centered under the bed.

You need table lamps on nightstands on each side of the bed...not too tall, you don't want to see harsh bare bulbs from the bed. Get nightstands with storage.

Consider one long large dresser as opposed to many smaller storage pieces that seem to spread clutter aroung the room.

The floor mirror could be to the right of the tv to reflect light from the window.

A lower bed would give the appearance of more space but I don't think it's really necessary.

The bed looks fine. Maybe it looks really large to you because it's bigger than what you're used to. Tracefloyd gave you some good ideas. I also don't think the dark blue wall is doing the room any favors. Move the rug, or maybe you need a larger one. 9 X 12 is usually the right size for under a king sized bed. I would install real closet doors also. Corral or reduce the clutter. Get a larger piece of art for over your bed if that's important to you. Luckily your pups won't care how the room looks. :-)

@ShadyWillowFarm, people live their lives in the way that serves them best. If you don’t want dogs in your bed, then don’t have them there. Stop judging other people’s choices. The poster didn’t ask for an opinion on that subject.

    Closet doors would be nice.

Good advice already! do you love the rug? i wonder about trying the room without it - I think one (soothing) wall color as suggested + no rug might help the room feel a little less chopped up -

also totally agree with @tracefloyd about one larger dresser versus lots of smaller pieces (FB Marketplace has amazing dressers if youre patient) -

when DH travels my big dog sleeps in the bed with me and i love it ❤️

All walls the same soothing color. One long dresser with lots of storage. Bedside tables with storage and wall hung sconces to free up surface space on them. Have your dresser and bedside tables all the same color finish and one that blends with the wall color instead of popping.

No chair - it just takes up floor space and collects stuff. Try no rug at all. Switch out the floor mirror for a mirror on the back of the door. Remove the black corner bookshelves. Can you store books elsewhere in your home? If not, place an invisible ladder vertical bookshelf against the dresser wall to the far right of your dresser. Show us the inside of your closet to see if you are making the most of your storage in there.

Here's a bookshelflink. Lots of places sell them.

Enjoy your huge bed and cuddling with your pups! Our current dog sheds so much that we don't let him up on the bed - we'd probably suffocate from all the fur. I do miss a dog in our bed!

I love that you are loving your furry friends!

I had the same problem with a big bed in a small room. This might sound strange, but I put my bed on the wall entering the room. I now look at a long dresser and and art when entering. It amazingly made the room soothing and larger. It might sound counterintuitive, but your eye will skim over the edge of the bed towards the far corner, instead of focusing on a big block of bedding.

I like your bedding and area rug and painted wall also. So, try switching the bed to the opposite wall which is now the perfect color. Move the bed as close to the patio doors as possible - tight about 18". Instead of lamps on the side tables, install wall sconces.

On the wall where your bed is now, either get a larger dresser or add another one to match the one you have. It seems you have a lot of stuff (as we all do!), by adding a larger dresser it will give you more space to eliminate the stuff on the tops of everything. Clutter always makes rooms look smaller, so you have to create spaces for all of it and that it's convenient for your use.

Put the closet doors back on. Eliminate the chair -not needed as everyone mentioned.

In the corner near the closet, get a 12" deep x 24" white tower with a door and interior adjustable shelves for all that stuff on your open shelf. It will be tucked away and accessible. Refrain from putting anything on top!

Window curtains should definitely be ceiling to floor. You want everything to be sleek and simple.

We need to see the pups!

Love your blue duvet! Bold and graphic. That is all the color you really need in your room. The rest…neutrals. I immediately thought of a low bed frame with integrated bedside tables like this for you. Sleek, low, and easy for your pups to jump up on as they age. Bravo to you for rescuing them! ❤️.

Saying that dogs don’t belong in the bed is no different than saying throw pillows don’t belong on a bed. It’s not judgmental. But people choose to be offended, so if they want to crawl into bed with someone who doesn’t bathe, wears the same footwear in bed as outdoors, and doesn’t wipe its arse, or wash hands, I promise I won’t judge.

We have a 145 lb dog that thinks the bd is for him the other 2 mostly sleep on the cushions we bough for them. Anyway the bed IMO is not the issue it ios all the other stuff cluttering up the space .Take out all the stuff except the bed then see what is needed and waht can go somehwre else the only other solution is to not let the dogs in the bedroom . We have friends who do just that since the hubby is really not into dogs in the bedroom.

I think Revere Pewter would be very nice in your room. Is there a way you could re-configure your closet to have the dresser go in there?
