Can you show what the room looks like now? Pics should also show us what this means: "we have since expanded the wondow to fit that blank space". Also, if this is the previous owner's furniture, we need to see yours so that we can offer suggestions.

We need pics of what furniture pieces you own that would go in this room. Do you have a sectional, arm chairs, a love seat (I hope not!)? Do you have a rug already? Do you want bookshelves for actual books or shelves for decorative objects? Does the fireplace work, and would you want to sit near it when you entertain? What is behind the sofa in this picture? A dining table or the kitchen bar?

Please define what you mean by entertaining. Do you want to host themed cocktail parties, children's birthday parties, football bashes, formal dinner parties, book groups? Do you have a separate dining room? How many people do you want to host? Will you do the cooking or bring in a caterer? Will you barbecue outside and will people be moving in and out?

For some people, entertaining is a bunch of guys hanging around a kegerator and pile of pizza boxes, sitting on bar stools; for others it's linen tablecloths and polished silver.

Do you already have any furniture, as that will limit layout. If you have no seating, define your needs around family and entertaining - how much seating do you want, will you be adding a tv, is a bookcase a must, etc. and provide dimensions.

If you also want help in regards to design, cozy/modern isn’t enough info. Can you advise a style, preferred colors, etc. Do you have young children and pets to consider. Are you open to a rug, changing ceiling lighting, etc.

sectionals are hard to deal with in almost any layout. The natural inclination is to back one portion up against the wall and that can really limit layout possibilities. Would suggest replacing it with a sofa or, better yet, a pair of comfortable chairs that can be pulled away from the wall and be placed opposite your existing sofa.

Thabk you all so much!! i didnt have current pics so worked w what i had but obvs thats not super helpful!! took some quick pics this morning but can update when its light outside. i am not attatched to any of this furniture and agree that the sectional isnt right for this room. by entertaining, i only mean simply having a room where a few frienda and family can comfrtably hang out and chat!

I struggle with the deep length of the room and the slightly awkward area to the left of the fireplace we currently have that tiny two seater there but that was only a place holder. it feels very far away from the green sectional

Dimensions will come into play, so maybe go on line for a room planner and test different layouts. In this design, view/tv/fireplace can be enjoyed. Wall on right has tv/bookcase and weight will be distributed, which is important.

If you pull the seating into the room by a few inches, it will feel more like a place to sit and visit with friends. You can get a smaller sofa (sectionals are harder to place) and still have it facing the window. There will be room for chairs as well, but placing everything closer will make the room feel larger.

Made a quick switch last night based on some of the feedback. Still planning to replace furniture and make a different arrangement but this is much better already. unsure if what to do with the big blank space in the front right corner. have a place holder there for now

You really need to do a floorplan with dimensions. Pictures distort distance. Also, don’t pull furniture all the way back against the wall, move it in by a foot at least. A conversation area is 12x12, so you want furniture arranged at that distance so no one has to shout across the room. Don’t put a tv in there just for the heck of it, it’s a nice space that is great for relaxing, talking and reading.

Will work on my floorplan this weekend. this furniture is absolutely the wrong size for this room but will keep what you said in minds for sure. yes, i do not want a tv in this space

Finally did my floorplan! Now I need to figure out the best size furniture for the space

A friend quickly sketched this out for me and I lean towards thinking this could work well. The only thing that I would like that isn't on here, is a cozy chair right next to the fireplace. Does this seem like it could work? Any suggestions on alternate layout that would be better?
