Is that your furniture and accessories? Take everything and move pot of the way and post a picture of the FP straight on. Take a picture of the entire room. Post them here as a comment

Is it appropiate to the house? What age is the house and does this mantle match the rest of the trim and fixtures. I see the slate hearth and feel that someone added this to a 1960's house. If that is the case I would have no issue tearing it out as I do not find it beautiful.

Yes, the slate tile hearth is incongruous with the fireplace surround. So, the question is: which of these elements are original to the home? (How high are your ceilings? That may give you the answer. )

I’m guessing the surround is at least more appropriate than the tile. I honestly think the tile is what is setting me off too, and what I need to play with. My house is an old 1860 house, but the room that the fireplace is in is an add in room from around the 60s so that makes a lot of sense
