kitchen layout help

last modified: 3 years ago

I’m in the middle of renovating my condo, it will be a short term rental and potentially long term. It’s in a brick building close to downtown so the interior is going to be more modern/contemporary. I would like ideas for kitchen cabinets/backsplash/countertops. I have attached the layout, it’s a long narrow kitchen that opens up to the living room. I wanted black cabinets with light countertops and maybe a light island. I have also attached how the kitchen looked before. I've also attached my mood board for the place with the color of the floors. Any suggestions would be highly appreciated. I had granite before and that was a pain to keep clean, so I was thinking of doing a honed granite or a light quartz. But something that is low maintenance.

I’d stay away from black cabs and rather go with something like in your first photo, the light oak.

Because the kitchen is small I'd do a range not wall ovens. Counter space and storage space are precious. I'd also caution against the black because the space is narrow and pretty far from the windows. Row houses are beautiful but they don't get light in the middle! (Keep in mind that beautiful inspo photos are flooded with light AND edited to appear so)

Do you mean like Airbnb? No need for a huge fridge in such a small space not need for awall oven only a range . IMO black cabinets show every tiny fingerprint and when chipped a total nightmare to fix easily/ not to mention the lighting which will need to be mega since black swallows light . I actually don't care about the decor in the rest of the space for sure not the bedroom . Have you actually got your license for this most cities are making this very hard to do now. Of course any major changes in plumbing or electrical need permission . I need mor einfo and a to scsle floor plan of the space but in my experience most people using shrt term renatls spens very little time in the units . Give us all of this info in comments here DO NOT start another post.

Black cabinets are a very specific taste and as rebasheba said, require good lighting because they will make the space dark. Lighter would be more welcoming. If you really want black, do it only on the perimeter wall as a couple of your renderings show, with a light peninsula or island.

I did hire a designer that specializes in STRa to give me the layout and she had recommended the black cabinets vs the light. I also wanted a stand alone range hood and took away the upper cabinets as it will be a short term rental and they don’t need all that work space. That fridge is also small, I wanted a European built in fridge but was told it’ll be too small. The width of that wall is 132”.

I am in the process of getting a permit to rent it out. Two other units are renting their units out as well so I don’t foresee any issues with that.

Here is the mood board and design I got from the designer.

This a very dark room with all the black accents. I would note that the 8’ square rug would be too small. And the wallpaper seems quite oppressive to me. The lighter oak for cabinetry would be the way to go to bring light into the space. And I would not do so much black furniture. Just one person’s opinion.
