You could strip the finish and carefully stain a stripe around the ends (to match the cabinetry). Then refinish. Try to emulate the old floors with contrasting edges. Or get a carpenter to do an actual inlay. Or carpet treads for steps.

Maybe try a clear bright visual cue of the last stair off to the side? Wallpaper, color?

Are these new stairs? that last step looks like the overhang is too big compared to the rest. That is trip hazard going UP the stairs.

The inlay is a nice idea. I think I would find a pretty stair tread. It doesn't have to cover the whole stair. Put it on all the stairs. Then if you get tired of it, you can change to something else.

Yes pretty new stairs. I think there will be more trim under that bottom stair so it won't have an overhang as much when that is done. My husband is the carpenter so you know how that goes.

I love a good stair runner but having a harder time imagining one on such a short run of stairs - maybe stair treads or a simple/delicate decorative stencil painted over top of treads?

In the meantime simply put a small brightly coloured or patterned non-slip mat on the floor at the bottom of the last step.

For now stick a grippy bath rug or kitchen mat on the floor below the bottom stair. $8 at Walmart if you don’t already have something. Just to bring attention to the change in levels.

The overhang on the starter step is too big. That front edge will break as you come down the stairs. Add another layer of riser for additional support, immediately.

You can paint the front edge black for visibility.

I'd put non-slip tape on some of the treads.

I have told this story in these forums before.

We lived in a temporary rental house that had a few wood stairs that looked a whole lot like yours. I slid in my socks and landed on my back and as I lay there in agony, I remember thinking: I will NEVER have uncarpeted stairs in any house I live in, ever again, EVER.

And when I see your stairs, I remember that. One fall, and you'll take care of those things.

I think LaLa Girl’s solution is a good one. Vibrant colored tread covers solve the visual cue of the last step and the tread slipping issue. It is so easy to take a short set of step faster than intended and slip and fall. I suspect these treads are an inexpensive fix so if you don’t like them just use them temporarily while you brainstorm what is next.

Perhaps you want to remake the treads the same color as the cabinets?

I dont know if sone inlais strip will be enough. Get some dark wood colored tape, cut it the width of an inlay and see how it works for a few days.

Keep it simple get a small bright area rug well backed. BAM done. Gives the end a nice soft landing for the socked foot too!!

I remember using rag rug stair treads from LL Bean years ago. I had a similar concern over tripping. Maybe some type of treads - I think I nailed mine into the stairs (they were on the third floor and not particularly well-finished).
