Wait till the room is finished and everything you want to keep in the room is in place. Don't rush the processes. Tip on buying area rugs, buy the smallest rug available to decide if that is the color, thickness, etc. Much easier to return a smaller rug than a larger one.

My room was finished, I returned 7 rugs, they are not always what they seem on line. Colors were mainly off. I ended up keeping a rug, that was surprisingly different in color than I had thought was pictured. I feel very lucky to have found it.

I agree with njmomma, but would like to add that I think color is a secret to keeping a basement from feeling like a basement. So don't be afraid to add a big rug in bright colors of your choice later. It seems like so many people write in here asking why their basement room looks so cold and dreary and when you look at the pictures, you see there's no color in it--just neutral grays, etc.

Are those the actual stairs? No railing?

No no stairs have a railing! lol The app didn't have stairs in the same colour with a railing. And yes I think I will wait until everything is all done and in place before picking a rug (likely with some colour). I like the idea of buying a small one just in case I have to return it. Thank you for your insights :)

UPDATE: So we are mostly done our basement but I feel like I am missing a couple things..I think I want to include an arc floor lamp behind the small end table between the couch and chair and I know I need something on the wall to the right of the TV above the dog bed..Not sure if I want to do shelves (requires dusting lol) or some sort of picture. I have no preference on prints or photos except I feel like it should be black/white because the rug is so colorful. Any input will be appreciated!
