That's terrible! I could do better when I was 12! True this can be made less noticeable with lots of caulking, but it will always look bad and be prone to cracking. It needs to be redone.

Looks like the walls are not square, but should be able to get a better fit running one to the wall and coping the other to fit onto it.

Two possibilities; utter incompetence or the installer just doesn't give a hoot. Neither bodes well.

Adjusting the miter so it fits would have taken an extra five minutes. For square trim like that a butt joint would look a lot better and be easier-- just one angle to adjust. There isn't really anything there to cope.

Thats awful. He should not have even mitered the corner. He should have run a straight piece and coped the next piece for a perfect corner, regardless if walls are off kilter a bit. I would stop him right there, and find a finish carpenter, that can install trim correctly.

No not caulk - yuck!. Could fill it in with epoxy wood fill and sanded smooth and level, and painted over you would not see the mistake. That's assuming the person had good attention to detail..... which this one obviously does not!

Reminds me of years ago when I was asked to install base in a manufactured home. I kept all the inside and outside miters tight. The rest turned into a major caulk job for a painter. I was blamed for it...haha
