vanity problems

I have this very dated vanity/sink combo that I would like to replace BUT it’s 52” wide making it almost impossible to find an off the shelf replacement. I don’t have or want to spend tons of money on it due to age of house, location, heavy usage etc (kids, 3 large dogs, cats) does anyone know where to find 52” vanities? I need it to go wall to wall and not have any open space at the bottoms due to the aforementioned kids/pets. Or do I just try and repaint it all? If so, has anyone had good luck with painting a vanity top?

51" vanity with 1/2" board on each side to fill the gaps to reach 52", standard sink and faucet, and remnant from a slab yard for counter top?

    - or -:

Two 26" vanities (if you're open to double sink, though you will likely have very little counter space)?

36" vanity (which are easier to find) plus 16" linen closet?

Have you considered just replacing the doors and drawer fronts and the vanity top. Or just replacing the vanity top and painting the base?

I have, but I haven’t found much luck yet on replacement doors in the right size so I’m going to try and see if I can get the molding off and repaint. If I do that,I might try painting the vanity top too and if it all turns out terrible, then spring for a whole new set up (if I can find one)

Why not keep the vanity top and just replace the faucet? You can find an economical faucet.

If there are stains, what is the vanity top made of?

I’m definitely going to replace the faucet, the top is extremely ugly and dated so at minimum I’m going to try and paint it with an epoxy but if that turns out terrible I’ll replace it.

Google doors and drawer fronts and there are dozens of links to stores that make the doors and drawer fronts any size you want. This is just one:

Just type 52" vanity in Google's search box

Yes, I have tried that and only gotten vanities in the 2k price range that take several weeks/months to deliver and that doesn’t even include a vanity top…I’m trying to find a more economical solution

You didn't indicate what you consider an acceptable price range, but Home Depot has some solid surface vanity tops in the $500 range that are 55" wide. Other stores might have similar price points. Maybe you could get a fabricator to trim both sides? The quality might not make it a long term solution, but might last until the kids fly the nest....

Look at a company like Bertch for vanity parts. You’d do a 24” center sink cabinet and 2 12” drawer cabinets at each side. Then matching filler strips for the outer edges. Done all the time. Then look at a local countertop fabricator for a remnant top and sink.

Just noticed your comment about wanting something under $2k. Bertch will be more than that. A big box store may have something for less.

I’d try to remove trim, tedious job, fill holes sand and paint. Cultured marble counter top? You can try polishing it, with a new faucet, you may be able to live with it. Remove faucet and drain when you polish, there’s some good compounds out there. A handy person with trim can always update doors and drawers. Good luck!

Just paint the base something that goes with the existing top and get a new faucet.

I've seen much worse when it comes to cultured marble vanity tops.

Under 2K is not a realistic budget.

If your budget doesn't allow for replacing the lot, I would just change the faucet, repaint the cabinet a dark color and repaint the walls something that goes better with the whole thing. I think a dark brownish gray on the vanity would look great, add a nice new shiny chrome faucet with a taller spout and new pulls to the cabinet, then paint the walls a neutral off white or light greige.

This transformation reminded me of your bathroom https://www.calypsointhecountry.com/how-to-paint-bathroom-vanity/

The reason I am saying to replace the countertop is that the countertop and cabinet don't go well with the flooring and the countertop is less expensive to replace than the flooring.

Pick a countertop that you love with the flooring. Then pick a paint color for the cabinet that works with the countertop and flooring and then pick a wall color to work with the countertop, flooring and cabinet.

I was hoping just to go with a solid white countertop as the trim is all a bright white too and the go a dark brown or blue for the cabinet?

Maybe you could get a cultured marble vanity top that was 60" with one sink in the middle in plain white and you could get someone to cut it to fit, a bit of each end. (Really it will be 61" made for a 60" vanity)

Replace your vanity with a ready-to-assemble vanity cabinet, custom-sized to your dimensions to the 1/16 of an inch. Ships to you with all the pieces flat on a shipping skid and you assemble and install. Saves a bunch of money and you get what you want.

You should be able to get a countertop remnant with one of their sinks for a reasonable price.

Try looking for a second hand vanity. Like FB Marketplace. Something with some drawers. A 48" vanity will work in that space. Use 2" fillers either side to fill the 52" space. It looks like the vanity that you have is 48". Either fillers were added or the cabinet has extended stiles left & right sides.

You don't know it yet but you probably don't want a 52" vanity. Because getting a 52" vanity into that space will be very difficult or next to impossible. The walls likely are not in perfect parallel planes to one another, the corners are likely not perfectly square, the casing on both doors would have to be removed... The vanity would have to be slid into the room and there has to be enough space for a person to stand in front of it, have some space to work and slide it back into the alcove. From what I can see in the refection in the mirror, it looks like a really tight squeeze. A shorter vanity will be much easier to maneuver into place.

Ditto the recommendation to buy a vanity top that is the next size up and have someone trim both sides so it will fit your space. You probably can get a tile handyman to cut it for you. Depending on what is the vanity material, it should be cut with a tile saw blade and probably cooled with water. You may be able to find inexpensive vanity tops if you have something like a Surplus Warehouse in your area. For an inexpensive remodel, try to avoid a mail-order product.

I have, but I haven’t found much luck yet on replacement doors in the right size so I’m going to try and see if I can get the molding off and repaint.

The trim is probably both glued and pin nailed to what is probably plywood. (These look like 3/8" inset lipped doors which were typically built out of plywood.) Highly likely that some of the plywood veneer will come off with the trim. So be prepared for that. How are your refinishing & repair skills?

As to replacing the doors--with that vanity, because it has wide stiles, replacement doors can be wider than the current doors. You have enough space that the door height can even be a bit more (not less). Door width and hinging overlay gets a bit complicated but once you understand the basics, it can be figured out. Just know that a slightly wider door can work and that you don't have to exactly match new doors to the dimensions of the old doors.

There are many 48.5" wide vanities with countertop and sink included around $700. I would rip yours out, install this and then add trim to cover 1.5" gap on either side. I believe this will be much more simple and likely cost less in the long run than trying to find new doors and new countertop or have a countertop cut or epoxyed.

I would not go near epoxy with kids and pets in the house unless they can stay elsewhere for a good handful of days. That stuff is so toxic.

I feel like you are being resistant to options that have been offered and not doing the homework, just wanting something prefab that does not exist in your price range.

    Order pre-painted doors from Cabinetdoors.com

you can get the color "In the Navy"

you can order the doors and drawer fronts in virtually any size you want

    Doors: 1/16th in increments

    • Minimum width 5” Maximum width 26”
    • Minimum height 5” Maximum height 47”

The cost for a 12x24 slab door Painted In the Navy SW9178 is $80.00 x4 =$320

If Corian is higher than you want to spend go with Formica - there is nothing wrong with Formica in a kids bathroom.

What if you just got a premade inexpensive 48” vanity with top and sink, and padded the sides with wainscoting - and the backsplash too? You can get pvc or plastic boards at the big box store and paint them. The wainscoting can go a few inches higher than the countertop.

You might have to find a vanity with straight sides. The countertop might be slightly bigger. You’d have to figure out how to fill the gaps, but if you find a simple vanity, that might not be hard.

    Maybe one like this:

Thank you all for the feedback and suggestions. I hesitate because I left out the issue of the shower which is in the other side of the wall (to the left of the vanity) I was informed 2-3 months ago that there is a leak in the shower and a plumber is finally coming Monday to tell me what is needed to fix the leak - it could be minor or major and that would mean breaking through the tile shower to get to the pipes. This of course is my priority so I’m refraining from committing to a new vanity/top until I know the extent of the shower issue. So I was hoping the more knowledgeable and experienced individuals here would have some ideas for the vanity/sink in the meantime. Just trying to do my homework

Love the wall color in there. I would paint the vanity a color that compliments with floor and wall. Replace the countertop and faucet.

After you find out about the shower issue, and decide to tackle the vanity, you can purchase a 48” vanity. You’ll need 2” fillers for each end. Your choices for a countertop are numerous. You can shop for a remnant at any stone place or go with Formica or other solid surface counters.

It may be cheaper to pull out the vanity to get to the shower valve. If you break the tile, the entire shower has to be redone to waterproof the whole thing.

I was informed 2-3 months ago that there is a leak in the shower

    Is this a rental?

a plumber is finally coming Monday to tell me what is needed to fix the leak - it could be minor or major and that would mean breaking through the tile shower to get to the pipes.

Leak in the shower as in a leaking faucet or water on the floor?

A leaky faucet can often be easily repaired with no need to break into the wall. Water on the floor outside of the shower most often indicates a problem with the shower pan or clogged weeps holes in the drain. This is a complete tear out and replace situation.

This is not a rental, just built in 1970 and hasn’t been remodeled other than new tile flooring and paint. The tile isn’t special but it was probably put in during the 90’s. The shower and toilet are separated from the vanity by a pocket door but I’ve included pics for a better sense of what’s going on. I’m hoping worst case scenario is that the tile abound the tub has to go/be redone and the tub can stay as is. I realize it could be worse but that’s my ‘best’ worst case.

Also found out the official color of the current vanity is ‘honey gold’ so you know it’s awesome.

We live in a medium size midwestern town and both of work FT, we bought the place not for the house but the 6.2 acres, 100 yr old barn and outbuilding. The house is a good size for us but the previous owners were older and didn’t update much. We started with new flooring and painting and focused on outdoorsy stuff over the summer. I got informed about the leak end of Aug right when I got Covid for a month plus nobody will call me back for estimates so it’s painfully slow going.

    Forgot the pics!

Do you like the pocket door? If not you might consider removing that wall and replacing it with a glass panel. My MIL had something similar and combining the two sections of the room made it seem so much bigger.

I don’t hate it but that’s an interesting idea, TBH it doesn’t get used much so we’ll probably leave it unless we are forced to do an absolute complete gut job of the shower area
